You have got to ask the pilgrims that meet the full up albergues as to which category their albergue was.
I have not met albergues that were full up, what can I say....
I am in two minds about these conceptions of "bed race".
If you take for a minute the premise that an albergue will not willingly let all the beds be in the prebookable status, and thus will have a percentage of beds available for the first come, first serve category,
- then some of the...
one good tip:
If you last leg is too long before SdC, check in at Reina Lupa, situated just a small distance from the track in Susanah. In this way, you will be just 10K south of the city and will arrive rested before
your end goal.
The hostel is near the restaurant at the main road in, but set...
I also found it a nice piece of stretch that I recommend others to do, when they want a nice stretch of only one week and no crowds. Apart from that it is beautiful and tranquil...
I recommend to end up 10 Ks before SdC and stay at Reina Lupa in Susanah, have a nice night and have an early...
Last season they were in need of staff and was closed down, as well as they usually are closed in winter season.
Good to hear it is open again
Stayed here a couple of times
35€ is right on the money for me too on the VdlP, same mix of basic albergues and sometimes split accomodation through booking.com, in a privat setting due to fx a festival in Caceres where everything was taken..
Gone are the days of yore with 25€ daily on the CF, too, I suppose.....
with that in mind, here´s a golden tip:
Do stop in at a last leg before Santiago, and book in at Albergue Reina Lupa. This will be a short 10 km before the end. It is new and good and it will be a better, shorter stretch the next day w/ a twoyearold....
The residing Mama runs a very tidy ship...
Have you found a Camino app for the stretch ?

by Gerald Kelly, who is also found on FB in the group Camino de Santiago All Routes...
- in that case, do this:
there is a most prized albergue just shy of 10K before SdC.
As you get nearer the end, you will have the N525 main Road on your left, very near to the walking path
- Reina Lupa, in Susana, will give you good accomodation, and a very short entry into Santiago the next...

I took the easterly route, which goes straight up for quite some time, but is quite beautiful. I had some long lonely walking hours, which was good for my bad foot at the time..
Brierleys map says elevation 0 to 510 meters in 7 kilometres, do not let that discourage you !
Out from A Guidina, I mistakenly took the route down the street by mistake and went to Verin, but it being a Sunday, found many things closed, and was not able to rest and resupply ..this was ´19.
Someone said to me, it was mainly a bicycle route and I went to my supply of extra food, beef...
Ourense is accessible by AVE train from Madrid, if you come from overseas. A pleasant ride in high speed trains, in lieu of taking a plane...by the way
A very good choice, make sure to, if possible , to land in Susana and stay in Albergue Reina Lupa, so as to get a fresh morning entry to Santiago the last 10 kms. It is close to the path and on the main road...
