Do you want to share the first stages with me

I hope you made it through the first days OK. No robberies, and no worries. Being anxious about being robbed would take away the charm of pilgrimage. Post us here to let us know how you are. Buen Camino, David, Victoria, Canada.

Experience and advice (first 400k, May 2013)

I'm glad the VDLP is working out for you. After being afraid of shin splints, how are your legs holding up? I love your photos. They trigger very warm memories and feelings from my pilgrimages on the VdlP. I wonder how Anniesantiago is doing? Buen Camino, David, Victoria, Canada.

    Sitting in Philly

Annie, Have a wonderful journey. If I remember correctly, you walked Seville to Zafra a couple of years ago in the summer. The sun beat down like a hammer on an anvil and you made a wise decision to stop. I hope this Camino goes well for you. I've found May to be a good month on the VdlP. I...

Super highway and AVG construction is destroying the VdlP

I walked the VdlP in April/May 2010. There was adequate lodging on the Sanabres then. Once you are in Galicia, there is a municipal alberge in every town.

Local bus and baggage service along the Via de la Plata

Jirit, Sorry to hear of your wife's knee problems. It really pitches a wrench into the works of pilgrimage. Glad you are able to enjoy the journey together, even if you are not walking the whole way.

    Food on the VDLP?

I lived on a diet of nuts and dried fruit. When I could find it, I bought a kilo, and then had something to munch on for 4 or 5 days. I never seemed to be near a town at lunchtime. I never felt hungry, or out of energy due to lack food. In the smallest towns, there is sometimes an enterprising...

flooding at arroyo de los Molinos north of Santiponce

I crossed it twice. April 2006 and May 2010. Just took off my pants socks and boots, put on my sandals and started across. Above my knees both times... Above mid thigh on the second trip. Enjoy it all. David, Victoria, Canada.

    VDLP Winter - any advice

25 miles per day = 40 kms per day. I don't know of anybody, summer or winter, who has a daily average this high. Although many pilgrims in summer have an occasional 40 km day. Let go of such goals, and just walk each day as it comes. Enjoy the Camino. David, Victoria, Canada

Cycling the VdlP on touring bikes

When I was on the VdlP in April/May of 2010 I had a few rainy days. One wet day, I came across a couple of cyclists on Mtn bikes who were sticking to the walking route. Their tires were mired in clay so badly that their Vbrakes were full of mud and the wheels wouldn't turn. If, by a touring...

Getting credentials at Puebla De Sanabria or later

I understand there is some discussion about the albergues only recognizing "official" credentials. However, in 2010 and before, I received credentials from the Confraternity of St. James in England http://www.csj.org.uk/ And from the Canadian Company of Pilgrims http://www.santiago.ca/...

    Lonesome Trail???

I walked the VdlP in April/May, but understand that the southern states like Extremadurra are just that...Extreme in the summer. I have also heard that some of the Albergues, say south of Zamora, close in July and August because the number of pilgrims drops right off. But in May, the route...

English-Language App Guide to the VDLP Now Complete!

I know those people too. We walk the same Camino but we are on different paths. It makes meeting people like you special. We will not talk about the others. I will ask you, "What inspired you today?" and you will understand.

    Mosquitos!

I've done the VdlP twice, starting from Seville in mid April both times. The firsst time I went straight North from Salamanca and joined the Camino Frances in Astorga. The second time I turned west and went through Orense to Santiago. I recommend the second route. As for mosquitos. None in...

Two more days and we go

Enjoy the journey, and God bless you. Just reading the well wishes for you makes me feel a longing to do the VdlP again. Such a marvelous experience. Ultreia, David, Victoria, Canada

    Sevilla here I come!

LT, sorry to hear of your misfortune. Getting to Zamora in 23 days is a real accomplishment. You must have been walking in the mid-day to accomplish that (Unless you were starting in the dark, which I could never do) I think in the summer heat, the plains of extremadura are the anvil and the...

    Walking in August

In August, the sun is the hammer and Extremadura is the anvil. Take extra electrolytes as well as water. Sodium and Potassium. I carried a preparation called Gastrolyte and took one or two doses on the days that were particularly hot and hard. Buen Camino. David, Victoria, Canada.

Cycling the waymarked path on VDLP

Here is some of what you are in for. These fellows got totally bogged down in the mud. It rode up as their wheels turned and fouled their v-brakes But this is fun, right?

Cycling the waymarked path on VDLP

Hi Paddy, Seville to Zamora is relatively flat...No, it is really flat and a hybrid bike would be fine, although nearly all the cyclists are on Mt. Bikes. If it gets wet, the soils are mostly sandy so the mud is not too sticky but there are places where mud can be a problem. From Zamora...

First camino, via de la plata?

Be flexible, and sensible... Suffering is optional. Always !!! carry lots of water. Electrolyte pouches are terrific. I carried "Gastrolyte" and would have a pouch or two in half a litre of water after my walk each day. Covering up is wise. Loose long sleeved shirt, Long pants - both...

Places with Internet on the Vdlp

Hi SueH, Getting a bed during Semana Santa can be a challenge. Not only do Spanish people go to the city for a weekend holiday, many take the opportunity to do 4 or 5 days on the Camino. On Easter Saturday 2006, I couldn't find a room in Merida because my guidebook said there wasn't a refugio...
