I just can't imagine travelling all the way to Spain just to race from one bed to another. It would be easier and more economical to stay closer to home ... obviously (and sadly) the "place" is of little significance.

I think you've discovered the true essence of a camino. No plan is needed if you let the camino be your guide. You are going to have a great way. Since our plans are very much the same, our paths just might cross. Buen Camino
"Fear of the unknown" is instilled in amerikans, and I guess Canadians, from an early age. It's all part of "the plan". Soon you will realise it's all a hoax and there's a whole lot of world out there to be explored and enjoyed ... and very little to fear ... respect, yes ... fear, not so much...
Not really. Too many over think, over pack, and over worry. You could actually get by with nothing but "the shirt on your back" ... just like the original pilgrims. Spain is not a 3rd world country, and you can get anything you "need" along the way. The Camino provides.
If you want a "feel" of what the walking is like, walk from Irun for a day or two ... I found Ribadesella to be one of the most beautiful places, but if you haven't been there, just about any stretch will be worth it.
As far a planning goes ... I think it's overrated ... Spain isn't a third...
I use relive ... https://www.relive.cc ... it creates a 3D video of my route and adds any photos I take along the way. Once created I can share it in various ways. There is a free version that gives you a good idea of its features, but I used the paid version on my camino.
