    Packing - edition one

I checked last night, and it looks like the flooding is resolved

    Packing - edition one

Hi Sarah, whats the weight of your sleeping bag? I have a spare Kathmandu lightweight sleeping bag and a spare silk liner that I could get down to you. I use a lightweight bag with a silk liner and am fine. Given I live in Northland and you in Invercargill, Im sure you wouldnt be cold. Im...

    Poles or No Poles?

I expect a number of people who take poles don't use them, as I saw a lot being carried, or on packs. In which case, they're extra weight.

    Poles or No Poles?

I'm a relatively recent convert to poles, pity I didn't discover that earlier. For me, they make the difference between arriving knackered with sore knees and feet, and arriving with energy to wander around town. At home I tend not to use them as I'm usually walking with a dog, but then I'm not...

Starting 25 April SJPDP - clothing choice

I've taken lightweight fleece, and lightweight puffer every time, and have worn them all. Most mornings I wear everything, and slowly peel off as/if the day warms up.

Reviews: Stiff rocker-style shoes that come in women's extra wide

Ive just heard back that the next Ghost shipment for NZ is March, so I might be lucky.

Reviews: Stiff rocker-style shoes that come in women's extra wide

Thanks, I've just sent an email off to the specialist shoe place I use to see if they can access the Brooks. I used to love my Brooks, until the style suddenly became too narrow. I later found out they had moved manufacture to a different country, so maybe that was the issue.

    Show me your backpack!

Yes its very different from here. I would be wearing a puffer jacket most mornings, and then peel off layers as the day progressed. In Spain it gets hotter and hotter all day, we don't have that variation here. On my first trip (during a September heatwave) I remember being in Zubiri, and at...

    Show me your backpack!

I walked in warm months (May/June Sept/October) and a headlamp was a key piece of gear for me. I walked early to avoid the heat, and used mine everyday, I would never have seen the arrows without it. I remember leaving Najera, and looking back behind me, seeing a long line of lights, so I wasnt...

Long pants and long sleeves in summer? Smart or big mistake?

Being very fair, I have issues with sun damage. Hoping to go to Spain again later this year I have hit upon a compromise. I will wear long sleeved tops, and shorts. I cant bear even the idea of long pants, so I'll have to stick with sunscreen on legs. And I have been unable to find tops with...

    Show me your backpack!

I have bought a bag from a $2 shop, removed the existing strap and made a loop to fit a belt through. The initial one was too small to fit it through. Reinforced the stitching. Wasn't pretty, but did work. If it doesn't work you haven't invested a lot. I did that with a bottle holder once too...

    Sick of Merino! Bamboo instead?

Bamboo is soft enough to be comfortable, but will be slow to dry, like cotton. I like it as underwear in normal (non Camino) life, but it doesn't have the same properties for dealing with smell or insulation that merino has.

    Rain...rain pants?

And I'm also wearing shoes too, which is rare! The shoes were mine, the pants were borrowed, so I had something clean for the plane ride home.

    Rain...rain pants?

I definitely prefer shorts for walking, pretty much all year round, I like my legs free, I hate walking in any type of long pants. I once called into the local shop on the way to a wedding, and people didn't recognise me wearing a dress! On the rare time I'm seen wearing jeans, people who know...

Did you get tired of wearing same colours for weeks?

We rely on rainwater, 2 x 30,000 litre tanks normally last a summer, using the water frugally. When city grandchildren visit in the summer, they are warned how long they have, and if they continue to run the water after we've knocked on the door - we turn the pump off at the switchboard. We've...

Dealing with Vertigo: Seeking Solutions for Balance Issues

Somehow my brain has adapted to rely on my sight to orient me - so I'm normally OK during the day. But this means that I have issues in the dark. I need to walk with a strong headlamp with a wide beam. I have found that salt, caffeine, tiredness make it worse as well as head movement and...

What was left unused? What can be left behind?

Or not open when you need them

How to wash a back pack?

Not my current backpack, but a previous one I realised was grimy (I was actively looking for grimy things). I was waterblasting the house, outdoor furniture and decks, and decided to do my back pack as well. I find that waterblasting is addictive and satisfying, so I'm always looking around for...

    Sticks and Boots

I'm a recent pole convert. For me, they make all the difference between arriving exhausted and sore, and arriving ready to explore the town.

Frivolous debate - swimsuit vs 3rd set of undergarments

Layering is the answer. Ask yourself, if I wore everything I have would I be warm on a really cold day. I like light layers. Mornings can be colder, so I'd wear layers until the sun came up, then be just in a T-shirt for the rest of the day.
