Lightweight Blankets for Walking the Camino

Exactly. But as noted, it's noisy. Also, someone made the very good point that it traps all the moisture. So, it's a no-go!

Lightweight Blankets for Walking the Camino

I wonder whether one of the heat wraps that get distributed to runners at the end of a race would work well? Has anyone tried tucking one into a liner? Super lightweight, but their ability to keep in the heat is crazy. I suppose it could be a little noisy if you roll around.

    Recommended phone apps (iOS)

Maybe try it again after you get to Spain? I kind of recall getting something similar when I downloaded it a few years ago.

    Recommended phone apps (iOS)

I have fortunately never had to use it, but my understanding is AlertCops will get you directly to an English-speaking officer, whereas 112 would not - this would be critical in a time of need. Buen Camino, and I hope this is all just over-planning!

Any suggestions for a technical shirt with the performance of Merino but without the drawbacks?

My new go-to is 32 Degrees Men's Air Mesh Tee 4-pack from Costco in black. $16 for 4! They weigh nothing, don’t stink, and dry extremely quickly. I’ve worn them in my last two Caminos with no issues.

How do you carry the important stuff?

Passport, credential go in a ziplock bag in my pocket. Phone (with attached wallet for cards) in the other pocket. Not much to think about really!

    Quick drying hiking tshirt help

I agree that “merino is your friend”. However, I had a great experience with simple Costco 32 Degrees Cool black t-shirts. Super lightweight and comfortable. Quick dry. And, they have some sort of anti-odor built in. I got a four pack in store for about $15!

Just checked out the website - looks perfect, thanks!

What's Your Favorite Socks or Combination You Have Ever Used?

Same combo here - though once I started using the Injiji toe socks I found I no longer needed the Vaseline (or paper tape!).

Hoka Shoe Owners: Speedgoat 5 or the Bondi 8?

I've used the Hoka Stinson 4 (CF Sept/Oct 2018), 5 (CP Sept/Oct 2021) and 6 (San Salvador/Primitivo May 2022) and they've been amazing. The 6 is far more cushy than the 5. The lugs did wear down, but I continued to use them without any issue. Nice wide toe box. Super thick soles were great for...

    Socks!

I use these with the Injiji toe sock liners. This combo worked perfectly - not a single blister. I used to use Vaseline and paper tape on my feet every day (quite a process). No longer!

Female Wide, Big feet : Size 11 (US) mens. Still searching for the perfect walking shoes.

Just a quick note - I've used Hoka Stinson ATRs for three Caminos. They have a wide toe box and are incredibly comfortable. The latest version 6 is super cushy. The thick soles also help keep your feet dry in mud or rain! Buen Camino!

US pilgrims - just discovered Google Voice for international calls

I was at a loss as to how to call ahead to make some reservations without paying a crazy amount of money to Verizon. My daughter showed me Google Voice, and it's amazing. I just called Spain for 1 cent/minute, not $2.99! One minor thing that it took me a little bit to realize is that before...

    Merrel MOABs

Lots of good info already, but I’ll add my two cents. I have low cut MOABs that I use for my everyday winter shoes. I really like them. However, I find the soles are very hard on my feet and not great for walking distances. I’ve walked all of my caminos in Hoka Stinson ATRs. They have a wide toe...

    Compression bags for clothes packing?

I'm a big fan of the SegSac "HoboRoll". It compresses everything and has multiple compartments so I can keep things organized. Also weighs nearly nothing. Not waterproof, but I've used a simple plastic bag and my pack cover when rain is in the forecast. Downside is that it's not particularly...

Tips for Choosing Comfortable Ear Plugs

FYI - assuming this was referring to the Sharper Image headband, it’s actually not Bluetooth. It has built in white noise (a few varieties to choose from). It works for her - I manage to sleep like a rock regardless. My parents talked about me sleeping on the high school gym floor while my older...

Tips for Choosing Comfortable Ear Plugs

My wife swears by the Sharper Image "Wireless Sound Soother Headband". It plays white noise though flat speakers. We have a fan in our room at home, and this recreates it on the Camino. Cost is $100, though you can sometimes find a coupon.

    LinerSocks

I brought Wright socks with the built in liners with me, along with a pair of unlined socks. I wound up buying the cheap two-pack of liners from the shop in Pamplona that everyone raves about (can't recall the name). The Wrights worked well for me, but they took a long time to dry. So, I went...

We Leave Tomorrow - I think I need a bigger Pack!

Buen Camino! You all have me wondering if we’re packing too lightly! We are starting the CF in mid September from SJPdP. I have a 40L Gregory that’s 13lbs without water, and my wife had a 28L Deuter that weighs in at 11lbs. Hope we’re not forgetting something! Good luck to all - we can’t wait to...
