    What camera do you use?

My partner used a Nikon P900 back in 2019 and whatever the latest iPhone then. There are later versions of the Nikon but they are bigger and heavier. I used my Canon EOS 200D and my then Motorola phone. Current phone is now a Samsung S22 Ultra. Partner uses the latest iPhone. Not sure what I...

I've walked the Camino in barefoot shoes

I wanted to take my Merrill Pacer Gloves with me on my first camino but after walking a couple of 16 km walks I got midfoot burning. Saw a podiatrist who looked at my gait and realised I crunch my left midfoot if my soles are too flexible. So I benefit from a more solid sole. Even though I...

    Tips for Cold Weather Walking

February on the Levante. We got good weather but the year before got blizzards. Smartwool short sleeved tshirt with Arcteryx Squamish. My Aarn back acts like a vest. On colder morning I had a puffy vest on top so I could get rid of it quickly. Fleecy buff and a regular buff. I also had cheapie...

What was left unused? What can be left behind?

I walked the Levante and Invierno in Feb/Mar. I lived in a smart wool tshirt with my Arcteryx Squamish Hoodie over the top with a down vest if it was cold. For bottons I tended to wear my Paramo Cascada 2 pants. If it was warmer I would wear my Purple Rain hiking skirt with 2XL compression...

Frivolous debate - swimsuit vs 3rd set of undergarments

I walked to Finisterre at the end of July. Got glorious weather and planned to go to the shops the next day to buy a bikini and hit the beach. The next day arrived and it was cold, drizzling and while I did wet my feet, there was NO WAY I was going in deeper.

    Feedback on packing list please

By the end of my Camino people kept asking me if I was Brazilian as I was the most tanned I had ever been even with sun block. You can pick up very small bottles of SPF 50 in the farmacias. I use an Aarn pack when hiking with front pockets. When not hiking with my camera backpack, a cross body...

    Bed liner vs sleeping bag

It all depends how hot you sleep and what you are used to. I live in the tropics and cold to me is 16 C. So on the VDLP in the 2015 heatwave I carried and used both. In Lubian I actually needed both together and was looking for blankets. I only used the sleeping bag in Feb/Mar 2019 as I did the...

Using the Altus with off and on rain

Question: if it is windy, do you have problems with the Altus acting like a parachute and then trying to wrap itself around your neck? Had this occur with a Sea to Summit poncho in a storm with high winds so my top half got absolutely drenched.

    I can't find a post

If you contact Diego who sells that poster, you may be able to get a discount compared to the one on the website. Especially if you order more than one poster.

What clothes do you wear after shower

In summer I would have 2 tech tshirts and a long sleeve merino baselayer. for bottoms I would have a pair of cargo shorts, a pair of light hiking pants and some running shorts. I also carry a very light windcheater. In winter I wear a merino tshirt with my windcheater over top. If it is cold I...

Cellular Signal on the Via de la Plata

Movistar has the best coverage although appalling service. Coverage tends to be reasonable whenever I have pulled my phone out.

Best men's hiking pants for any Camino

Paramo Cascadia 2 pants are incredibly versatile and sensibly designed if you are walking in cooler weather.

    Sexism in outdoor clothing

Bivouac, the NZ hiking chain, has hardly any pink in the women's section and a gorgeous mix of colours in both. They have the same brands as everyone else, just that the buyers are a little more in touch with their clients. I'm a big fan of Paramo clothing. The men's range has a great mix of...

Is it OK to keep your pack on your top bunk with you?

Medina del Campo is a nice wee town. The bar at Hostal Doña Alicia does a really good lunch. One of the best we had on the Levante.

Help! The walking pole makes me feel like the walking dead!

If you know someone with Pacerpoles, give them a go. Regular poles feel awful to me but I love my Pacerpoles.

    Bra Recommendations?

I am loving the 2XL compression bra It's like a tank top and is perfect if you are a C cup or less.

    Buying SIM card in Sevilla

Don't buy Movistar. They may have good coverage but my SIM has been nothing but trouble, not working for phone calls and texts.

Pacer Pole users - replacement rubber tips?

    Shirts and underwear

On my summer VDLP I used a thin adidas running tshirt I already had and had a Montane Bionic tshirt as well the adidas got wrecked by the pack rubbing on it. The Montane was fantastic. Basically any thing that is not cotton will be fine.

10 things you NEED to bring on the Camino de Santiago!

Please read the fine print very carefully. Many conditions are not automatically covered including some common ones. https://www.choice.com.au/travel/money/travel-insurance/review-and-compare/travel-insurance is a very interesting article. Turns out my usual insurer who tends to be the one the...
