Melanie's Via de la Plata app

Just received this from Melanie. Hi John. I'm checking into this for you. The group that owns Sutro Media is reconfiguring itself and it seems apps are temporarily unavailable. I wish I knew more at this point. Stay tuned! Melanie

Melanie's Via de la Plata app

    Doesn't work, but thanks. John

Melanie's Via de la Plata app

I just sent an email to Melanie to see if she can help. I too have been unable to download her app for iPhone. I'll post her reply.

Back Pack weight...how much should a person carry?

At the end of the day you will make personal decisions regarding what you feel you must take with you. Put that all in the bag and weigh it. That is the weight you have decided to carry. The learning curve lies in all those many decisions.

    Evening Wear

Maybe not in the albergue, but depending upon where you are a lightweight down jacket (4-5 ounces) could feel quite nice when you are out walking about. I sure appreciated having mine.

    Hiking umbrellas for sun protection

The umbrella (Golite) is now a must for me, but I also carry a very light weight rain jacket and pants from Montbell (Versalite). My justification was that the jacket would also serve as a layering piece with merino under it (perfect for the Aubrac in late April/early May) and the pants served...

Fleece (Sweater vs jacket) vs Puff vs Merino Sweater vs nothing at all.

I too have found that layering merino wool can provide great flexibility in widely varying temperatures. I also carried a Montbell Versalite rain jacket (6 oz.), but the one piece of gear I absolutely love is the Montbell Plasma down jacket. At around 4 ounces it provides great warmth for its...

    Best Lightweight Shirts?

Another vote for lightweight merino. Mine was an Icebreaker 150 weight long sleeve zip neck which I wore almost every day for 2 months in 50F to 90F weather. I also had two Icebreaker 120 weight short sleeve t shirts which I used for layering (or occasionally alone). I formerly used Patagonia...

    Designing the Perfect Camino Pack

The folks at Zpacks will cut your frame down to whatever size you want. I found that the stock frame height was unnecessarily high so I had them cut mine down to 21 3/4 inches and my wife's down to 20 inches. No charge for the modifications. I paid shipping to them and they paid the shipping...

Sleeping bag or fleece blanket? And why?

Consider the Montbell down thermal sheet. It is a lightweight down bag that fully unzips into a quilt. It weighs 15 ozs. It is limited to temps around 50 F.

    A remarkably light pack

Newfy, I have the same pack and will be testing it out from Le Puy to Santiago next April. My initial assessment is that the pack is well constructed and the polyester coating on the hybrid cuben pack material should go a long way to increase longevity. That being said the caminos we are...

    Comments on pack list?

Another vote for hikers wool. It made all the difference on the two Caminos I have walked.

    ipad questions

Laurie, I found that the iPad mini was a perfect Camino companion. It is small enough that it fit in my jacket pocket, so I never stressed about what to do with it after a day's walk. The weight is negligible in the grand scheme of things. Photos from your camera upload to the iPad through an SD...

    underwear

Here is what worked for me in January-February. Patagonia Capilene 2 T shirt, and Ex Officio boxer briefs. Both are light, well constructed, dry quickly, and are still in daily use a year later. I wore a Patagonia Capilene 3 1/4 zip turtleneck as a outer layer and a pair of Capilene 3 long...

    Pack weight question no. 987456

Caitlin, Don't get too hung up on the 10% advice. It is a good reference point, but obviously it is not meant to be an absolute. We all try to carry as light a pack as possible as that makes for a happy pilgrim and a fun Camino. However, another equally important consideration is your pack and...

    Pacerpoles - Walk Tall

My wife and I both used Pacer poles last winter SJPP-Santiago-Finisterre-Muxia. Will never leave home without them. Great product.

    Camino in January/February

Falcon, Glad to hear you are trading in your sun hat for a wooly one (you won't regret it). Enjoy your winter Camino and keep us all posted. Safe passage.

Clothing and equipment from a recent camino

I have just posted, on our blog, a review of the clothing and equipment Robin and I used during our recently completed, Christmas Camino. Aarn Peak Aspiration packs gets high marks, as do Pacer poles, Patagonia, Arctyrx, Marmot and Ex Officio clothing. Nunatak sleeping bags (but not the stuff...

    Raincoat-Poncho

I found the Altus to be a very good poncho, and would recommend it, however you must expect some condensation to occur inside as you exert yourself. I actually had a slight trickle of water running down the poncho sleeve a couple of times. It is a great windbreaker as well. John

NEW! Revised Techno Geek’s Guide to the Camino

Re: Techno Geek’s Guide to the Camino Does anybody know how to update a Google map, on a Goggle Blogspot blog, from an I phone using Motion X GPS? I was hoping that I could post a daily position on a blog map from an I phone using this GPS app. It seems like this should be doable but I haven't...
