Equipment list and opinions from recent camino

I'd agree - not great things to wear. When they get wet - and they will - they'll rub and chafe as well as everything else. Cotton holds four times its own weight in water and doesn't give it up easily. Next time you wash your jeans put them in a warm room over a chair and see how long they take...

Equipment list and opinions from recent camino

Again...yes there are lots of pharmacies....but not necessarily where you want them or when you want them or open when you need them to be. If you could rely on them completely there would be no need for any first aid kit. Whch would be rather like saying "Well i've never gone through the...

Equipment list and opinions from recent camino

My first aid kit (based on a combination of Camino and UK wet weather trekking) is: Waterproof Plasters Dry antiseptic spray Lint free dressing pads Self Adhesive bandage Tubigrip Compeed (OBVIOUSLY!) Needle & Thread Sterile wipes (only a couple) Small bottle eye drops (came in VERY useful)...

Equipment list and opinions from recent camino

Re: Equipent list and opinions from recent camino Nice pack - LOVE Acteryx stuff...... can't afford it mind but I love it anyway :) Fair enough list but I'd argue a couple of points on it.......although as with so many things it's a very personal thing.... The New Balance trail shoes - very...

    Chaffing - what's the solution?

Mine too! And mine's a 50 litre! TO be fair its a freeflow so it packs weird (banana shaped) I oculd probably...possibly..get my stuff in a 35l. Hmmm...then again I really do need that... I need some restraint i really do :)

    Chaffing - what's the solution?

Excellent! Glad you got it sorted Max. Just wanted to add though..."the 10% weight limit" makes it sound a bit like doctrine. I assure you it's not - it's a comfortable ideal to aim for but going over that is not a huge issue. I'll start this year over that, purely because of some of the...

    Sleeping mat?

I walked in august last year and needed a mat just once....but without it I would have bedded down on a stone flag floor, which would have been pointless basically. Sleeping mats do two things; they stop heat being leeched out of your body into the ground and they give you a little more...

    Chaffing - what's the solution?

Two solutions here i reckon.... 1. Get proper trekking pants ie: North Face, berghaus, Craghoppers etc - loose cut and designed to avoid that very problem. THey also dry very quickly. My north face trekkers are amazing - wind doesnt seem to get through much, they dry in minutes, and they feel...

    Boots or good jogging shoes?

I would always go for boots, no question about it. Going down steep mountain tracks litteres with rocks means you need good support for your ankles - if nothing else it can help offset the possibility of tendonitis which is hell! Also, if tendonitis does develop and you need to keep walking...

Equipment list and opinions from recent camino

Re: Equipent list and opinions from recent camino With a couple of exceptions we always managed to find somewhere to brew up - usually in the alberque kitchen. We took small sachets of all in one coffee and whitener; admittedly not the best coffee experience but very welcome at that early hour...

Equipment list and opinions from recent camino

Re: Equipent list and opinions from recent camino I would definitely agree that the bare minimum of toiletries is needed - they're usually liquid so that means a lot of weight. I'd hesitate to say 6kg, I think thats where the packing becomes personal. My partner struggled a bit with about 8kg...

    my packinglist - any thoughts?

I would advise just a little caution on the "if you think you're going to need it" thing but yes - I took a lot of stuff from the off that perhaps we didnt "need" for quite a while. For instance a very well stocked first aid kit - a big pile of instant white coffee sachets .....the first aid kit...

    Securing backpack for plane?

We thought about using the transporter bags but the idea of lugging them around seemed to make it less attractive..not so much the weight as the space they take up. We - and i think we got this idea from somewhere else on this forum but im not sure - did this: Wrap the hip belt backwards...

    my packinglist - any thoughts?

Personally i think your list looks fine!! I'd agree you dotn need lots of compeed to start - tbh i'd say the needle and thread option is better but make sure you have antiseptic spray as well. Compeed is a great preventative but once you have a large blister it's a waste of time. The "you can...

WARNING: THE DESERT GETS COLD AT NIGHT

I would agree that a microfleece is a worthy investment....more so than the thermal base layers, for precisely the reason John outlined. My fleece took up very very little space and in Galicia I just had it strapped to the outside of the pack - as for weight...I think its possible to get far...

    waterproofs in the shower

It's true that they're not usually seen as fashionable over in the uk ...the best place to find them is usually army surplus stores. The ones they sell will usually be quite tough - but make absolutely sure you get real surplus not after-market copies. Alternatively there is the snugpak poncho...

    waterproofs in the shower

That's just very slightly less worrying than the fact that....I know what you mean...

    thermarest???

I couldn't have said it better fiddletree, it all depends. I'm 6'2" and fairly fit so the weight didnt bother me at all. And its a fair point that your perception of the weight changes the more you carry it. You also get accustomed to it after a while though. But hey - at least we have a...

    thermarest???

It's a fair point about the albergues i suppose but I really dont understand the weight thing. Maybe it's just me but I dont understand the obsession with losing every available gram from the pack. My pack weighed about 11-12 kg (with water) which is over the 10% rule but I found it was...

hiking september/october. Sleeping Bag, or Sheet +Mat?

Following on from the other thread on this topic.... (viewtopic.php?f=30&t=2736&p=14894#p14894 ) In april/may i would wholeheartedly agree you probably dont need it. But I've just come back from an august trip and we definitely did. Met many people using them and indeed NEEDING them and also...
