My advice on sock liners - what fits best given your feet, the volume inside your shoe, and the volume of your "main" sock, is what you should wear. I have worn sock liners on a camino with roomier hiking shoes and loved them. On a different camino I omitted sock liners using shoes that fit...
I use SOLE active insoles with matetarsal pads - use medium or thick depending on the volume of the shoe. Others that include a hard plastic piece attached to foam or other light materials (like Superfeet) tend to create pinch points on my feet for some reason. I've never had any similar...
One comment about this topic - I have found that the Gortex version of a shoe runs slightly smaller inside the shoe than the non-Gortex version because of the added Gortex layer. Despite my previous comment supporting non-Gortex on the Camino, I would say that fit and comfort trumps all other...
Last fall my wife and I walked the VdlP/Camino Sanabrés and on to Muxia - the end was a month of daily rain. My wife wore non-Gortex shoes, mine were Gortex. Both our feet were drenched pretty much everyday. The daily wet feet was a completely new experience for both of us. What we learned...
I just bought a Gregory Zulu 40L pack for my next camino - must be the same pack as WisTom. I have a larger Gregory pack that I like, and I had walked my last two-month fall camino in an REI Traverse 35L, which seemed a touch small, is not nearly as well padded as the Gregory, and the torso...
Ivar - Will this map include the more obscure camino routes, like the Via Serrana, Camino de Uclés, etc.? Best I can tell from your website, it may not, unless they plan to update the map when they reprint it. Thanks.
I never thought I would want a poncho - used the rain jacket/pack cover approach successfully on a very dry fall Camino in 2021 and started out that that same way walking the Via Serrana and VdlP this past fall. But in major rain for days, we bought good ponchos mid-Camino and now swear by...
I wouldn't bother with rain pants. I would bring a poncho - the type designed for carrying a backpack. You can get a good one at Decathalon in Spain for 25 Euros. It covers a lot more than your legs for comparable weight, including keeping your pack, head and torso dry. We hit crazy rain...
I took a Scrubba bag to walk from SJPP to Finisterre two years ago. I used it a few times (and it worked just fine) but ditched it less than halfway through because of the weight. I agree with the other posts on this thread.
I own a terrific Tilley hat. I didn't take it on my first Camino, and I won't take it on my second this fall.
Tilley hats are the greatest, but they're heavy and I don't need the greatest hat in the world on the Camino. When we walked the CF in 2021, I left my hat three different places...
It sounds like the trail runners should work fine for the length of your trip. I used a similarly-soled shoe, La Sportiva Wildcats, to walk SJPP to Finisterre in 2021 and the soles barely made it - they were pretty smooth at the end. Am planning to walk from Gibraltar to Muxia this fall (850...
For removing embedded earplugs, I recommend inserting a bicycle pump into your mouth, close lips, and pump hard. Make sure there no people directly to your left and right who might be injured by projectiles.
I have the same set of side-sided paniers on my bike at home (Topeak) that I have used for years. They have held up very well over the years, so it should get you through the Camino just fine. One word of wisdom - don't pack anything with sharp/hard corners against the bottom of the soft...
I took a mid-sized towel on our CF pilgrimage. Not worth the weight. Next Camino I'll be using a small one. If you don't have wildly long hair, I don't see much benefit in anything but the smallest (the "M" size at REI). One person mentioned to have one large enough to wrap around your waist...
I know there is lots of advice being provided about different brands, but I will echo the recommendation for La Sportiva trail runners. Both my wife (women's US size 7 or 7 1/2) and I (men's European size 45 1/2) have narrow feet and narrow heels, and we both wore La Sportivas on the CF last...
