Can you convince me NOT to take paper copies?

I only ever take paper maps and instructions and have never had a problem yet. I don't have one of those funny walk-around phone things that everyone has attached to their hand, which, I believe, will sometimes let you down.

If You have Walked the Camino - Do you prefer boots or trail runners?

I wore boots for my first Camino. My second and third Caminos were in New Balance trail runners which were perfect. A lot lighter than the boots and my feet felt better at the end of the day. No blisters or sore feet.

    Shoes & Mileage!

I am one of those odd people who keep a record of the mileage I get from my walking shoes. I bought some New Balance trail runners for my 2019 Camino. I did 200 kilometres in them before going to Spain. I walked from SJPDP to Finistere via Muxia. Since coming home I wore them to walk 50 to 60...

Mug or not? (and other kitchen ware)

I carry a microwave safe mug, a plastic spork and a small pocket knife (I get the knife in SJPDP). On three Caminos that is all I have ever needed.

Backpack question: Ospreys Stratos 36L vs 44L?

I am just on 80 years old, weigh 69 kilos and am 1.7 metres tall. I have had nearly 70 years experience of tramping or walking long distances with a pack. Over that time I have learned what "I need" from what "I'll take that just in case I might want it". I am a minimalist and don't "need" much...

Backpack question: Ospreys Stratos 36L vs 44L?

I have always used a 20 litre pack on my Caminos and found it held all I needed. I do not carry food, just 500ml of water on the outside. On my last Camino my old pack fell apart and I replaced it in Leon with 25 litre pack as I could not find a 20 litre one I liked. I still carry the same stuff...

    Carabiners or “S” hook?

An S hook is handy to hang stuff in the shower as hooks are not provided. I use a hook that is attached to a suction cup that I can put up wherever there is a smooth surface. It is worth its weight in gold.

    Carabiners or “S” hook?

My pack does not have pals but does have close friends.

How many miles to put on your shoes before the Camino

I usually get between 4000 and 5000 kilometres out of the New Balance trail runners that I wear. I usually walk 100 to 120 kilometres a week, so I wear a new pair for at least three weeks before a Camino to make sure they are ready and I have never had a problem with my feet.

    Sink plugs?

I carry a universal sink plug. Nine out of ten places do not have plugs. I have lent it to a great number of pilgrims to wash their clothes. I have had this plug for over 20 years and used it many hundreds of times. It was $3.50 well spent.

Ingenious (to me) water bottle solution : )

I get an empty baked beans can, take the label off and put it in the mesh side pocket of my pack where you would normally put your drink bottle. My 500ml water bottle fits loosely in there. The silver tin reflects the heat to some degree and the gap between the tin and the bottle allows air...

To shave or not to shave

I had a full beard for forty years but had to shave it off when I had my heart bypass. Hence the photo to the left., but I started growing it again the next day. Obviously I don't shave on Camino. I convinced friends going on a Camino to grow a beard just past the scruffy stage before starting...

    Footwear on the plane

Like Marbe2 I always reserve an isle seat. I like to be up and down as much as possible and don't like disturbing others.

    Footwear on the plane

Yes Bookgirl, I do put my shoes on for the toilet (that is what it says on the door, maybe your planes have rooms with baths). I do not clutter up the galley. The big planes that Emerates use (I think they are an Airbus something and carry about 500 passengers) have enough space right down the...

    Footwear on the plane

I travel by Emerates and they fly from New Zealand to Dubai, which usually takes 18 to 19 hours. Then after a two hour stopover it is just a quick hop of 7 to 8 hours to a European destination. No sweat, Kiwis are used to it, get over it is the attitude. I do not take any shoes other than my...

How to use 2-factor ID for banking while traveling with a foreign SIM card

What a pa-larva over phones. |I don't carry a phone or any of the paraphernalia that goes with it. Don't need it. I carry an international money card loaded with the currencies that I will be using which enables me to get money from ATMs everywhere. Simple, job done.

Packing Toiletries for Lightweight Travel on the Camino de Santiago

One thing that this thread does, is point out the fact that everyone is different so such a great degree. I am an absolute minimalist but some people just cannot do without almost everything but the kitchen sink. I always laugh at those who cut off half of their toothbrush handle to save weight...

Packing Toiletries for Lightweight Travel on the Camino de Santiago

Graeme Hall is right. You just can't beat Sunlight Soap for everything. You don't have to mess about with all of this fancy stuff.

Packing Toiletries for Lightweight Travel on the Camino de Santiago

Soap. (The same bar for shower, laundry and hair). Sunscreen. That's it.

Footwear for Walking the Camino de Santiago French Route

Trail runners every time. I walked into my sports shoe shop and they had New Balance T590 v4 on special at half price. I bought them and they turned out to be perfect for me. SJPDP to Finisterre with hardly any wear. I already have another pair for my next Camino.
