I carry a Canon SX 620 in addition to my phone. The Canon has a long optical zoom lens, which comes in handy and the phone can't match. Not sure of your budget, but it retails for just over $300.
I’ve not used the gear ties on the Camino but have in other situations. They should work well in the situations cited. Also the large safety pins are great for attaching moist clothing to your pack to dry out.
I took a GoalZero solar charger and battery pack on the CF last April. I had absolutely no need for it and mailed it ahead from Pamplona; the weight savings was considerable and appreciated. There were always plenty of options to charge my devices, at least on the Frances.

Dee: I plan to leave SJPP on April 25. Looks like from Bajaracer's post I need to check with Sprint again. They clearly told me the phone will work in Spain (and France and Portugal as well), as long as I get their "proper" plan. This may mean it will work to/from the USA but not within Spain...
