Backpack question: Ospreys Stratos 36L vs 44L?

We both had the 36 L packs for Norte/primitivo caminos. We also carried a small, lightweight sleeping bag and rain gear which proved essential. 36 L was big enough for everything, plus our lunches each day. The 36 stratos also fit into the airlines box to qualify as a carry on bag. Perfect bag...

    Waterproof shoes

We have always worn waterproof/goretex shows. When the ground is damp with dew or light rain, the feet stay dry. When it rains we put on rain pants that cover the tops of the shoes and the water does not go into the shoes, and the feet do not get soaked. If they do- fill them with newspaper...

Open to criticism on my pack

Our thoughts-take the bigger pack, and you will have all the room you need for everything - all 11 lbs- on your list. That way you do not have to play tetris getting everything into a cramped space each day, nor have the items hanging on the outside of the pack banging into you with every step...

Tips to Keep your Hiking Shoes Dry in the Rain

In our opinion it depends on the weather. On EL Norte, El Primitivo, and the San Salvador, we hiked in May-June. They were cool (starts from 4C-14C when we started out each day), muddy, and rainy conditions. Even sunny days had lots of mud underfoot. We used Keen hiking shoes or trail runners...

    Question about raintrousers

We have walked el Norte, and San Salvador with rain and wind and cold. As indicated above- preferences are personal decisions, but our preference is a rain jacket and rain pants and waterproof shoes. Rain coat serves us well on cold mornings, and our feet remained dry throughout. This just works...

    Gore tex shoes or boots?

We have worn goretex, (or other companies similar membranes) on all our caminos. Three times on el norte or El salvador sections we had significant rain. Slip on rain pants- water did not enter the hiking shoes or trail runners- and our feet stayed dry compared to other walkers, even walking...

    Osprey Backpacks are awesome!

Interesting. When we bought our Sirrus and Stratos 36 L packs we filled them with our stuff and went on training walks. Mine (stratos) made squeaking noises that we could not figure out or fix. I called the store and they asked about the noise- they asked me if it sounded like crickets. I said...

    HELP! (Shoe advice) April 2020

We have walked el camino del norte twice, el primitivo, San salvador and others. Foot comfort is paramount. We prefer the waterproof- sometimes we have used Keen hiking boots, and other times trail runners, always waterproof. We also wear rainpaints so that the water does not run down the legs...

    Raincoat or poncho?

We prefer rain jackets- since in the evening on parts of San Salvador and Norte we needed all the warmth we could find and they served us well, also in the mornings when there was still frost on the ground. Our packs were so light- all our clothes were in use!

    Osprey Backpacks are awesome!

We used stratos 36 and Sirrus 36 on 4 caminos, and also on several trips to Mexico, Greece, etc. They are tremendous packs for our demands. On the camino, when full, they weighed about 6-6.5 Kg, which was fine for us..

    Trail runners on the Salvador?

We both wore trail runners exclusively on El Norte and the San Salvador earlier this year, and switched to sandals in the evenings. These served us well in the rain and cool weather we saw. I think runners would be fine on day 1 of San Salvador to La Robla, but from La Robla-Buiza-Poladura, and...

    How big is your pack?

we have osprey stratos and sirrus packs, both 36 litres. They served us well on el norte, primitive, and san Salvador. Two years ago they seemed fairly full @~7 kg. This year, we have so much room and about 6.5 kg. We find that personal preference outweighs the 10% rule of thumb.

Primitivo - May - reducing backpack weight

Jostony- we walked the Norte/Primitivo 4 years ago and will do so again mid May. Our packs were ~7 Kg, with light sleeping bags that we were very glad to have, and a pair of Keen sandals each. The sandals will change this year to something lighter. My wife has changed to trailrunners but I will...

    Hiking poles

Sort of off topic, but in Canada we can take ice skates for playing hockey (with sharp blades) on board airplanes in our carry on bag, but no hiking poles, nail clippers, tiny scissors or other dangerous goods. Must be a cultural thing!

    How big is your pack?

We used the osprey sirrus and stratus, each 36L, for the northern, primitivo and portuguese routes. We like how the bag fits and travels. Not a lot of room for extra things, and sometimes the baguettes were bent out of shape but that is what we will use again this spring.

What was in your pack when you finished?

We came back with essentially what we started with. Add on some post cards and two ceramic tiles with the yellow shell. But then we went for 2 weeks holiday near Cangas- walking around mountains and on the beaches- still with just our camino gear. People must have wondered why we always wore the...

Footwear - Waterproof or not waterproof.

When we walked the camino del norte we got hit with rain, and lots of mud, crossing wet fields, and river beds, and some very heavy rains. I wore waterproof keen low cut hiking boots- and rainpants that covered the tops of my boots. I was pleasantly surprised that while the boots were soaked on...

Join the quest for the perfect panel loading camino pack?

Nidarosa- I assume changes have been made since we bought ours in 2015. The company description now says they have a "Side panel zip access to main compartment" whereas ours have a complete zipper around the body! Oh well- we love ours- used on el norte, primitivo, portugues, Camino dos faros...

Join the quest for the perfect panel loading camino pack?

Nidarosa- Our bags (stratos and sirrus) are 36L bags that have a draw string and a lid, AND also a zipper around the main compartment as a panel access. They can be used as top loaded or panel loaded bag. That is why we like them so much. But they do not have the mesh elastic to store layers...

Join the quest for the perfect panel loading camino pack?

Hi guys. Osprey has two good models- the sirrus 36 and the kyte 36, both with female specific fits. We used the Sirrus on the Norte and primitivo. The Kyte was used by someone we met and has that mesh elastic area on the outside to stow maps or layers as they come off. Great packs both and a...
