Anytime I have my hiking boots on a trail I have gaiters on. Key is to find some that are easy on/off. Keeps dirt, pebbles, leeches:), rain out of shoes.

I agree. No need to have more than 2 pair - of anything - can even use Tshirt as a towel. Merino wool is nice, but there's other hi-tech clothing on sale with similar properties (i found some along the CF at Lidl, Decathlon. where i don't skimp is SOCKS... just paid $25 for one pair of Darn...
On my last CF I met a French lady who carried less than 4 lbs. She had no sleeping bag (used Alburgue blankets), she carried only one extra pair of socks and a t-shirt that doubled as a towel. i went from 22lbs to 5lbs after meeting her (mailed it to Santiago) and walked farther and happier...
i prefer Keens. Upper ankle is almost a necessity. I do alot of PCT section hikes. Doing the Portuguese Coastal route in February with the Keens. Poles are essential for balance - esp when tired and on slick tiles.
