This is for anyone and everyone. I was a hospitalera for a season. Many pilgrims have an expectation that someone else will take care of them. In some instances this may be true. However, pilgrims need to take responsibility for themselves. Bring a sleeping bag. You may never use it. But if you...
For really dirty or muddy water you need a pre-filter to remove the big chunks. I've used a bandana or the like.
For real expeditionary back country travel, I use an MSR Sweetwater. It's got a pre-filter. Very easy to clean the ceramic cartridge. On my bike rides, I'm using the MSR Micro flow...
I think the Sawyer is an excellant choice for the Camino. It's small, light, effective and easy to use. It's not something I'd take on a major expedition but perfect in this application. I might suggest adding a larger platypus. The threds match up and the larger platypus is a little more...
Just want to point out that "The rule of thumb" is based on an archaic law that stated, "A man shall use the width of his thumb to dictate the width of the switch he may legally use to beat his wife and children."
It's a pet peave of mine and I'm hoping we can come up with alternatives to said...
Yes, it's a similar injury for skiers. Often referred to as "skiers thumb". My personal solution is to put my hands all the way through the loops so the poles are essentially hanging from my wrists. There are some hazards with this as well. But for someone like me who is constantly dropping my...
Your backpack is relatively light for it's construction. I guided for a living back when I Was young and dumb. I had a 7,000 cubic inch (115 liters) pack that weighed 7 pounds empty.
You're getting off easy. I've smartened up some.
Check out the chart I stuck in there. Different countries use different names and sell it under various names. I could only find it in paint stores in Mexico for example.
Happy cooking!
One thing I noticed on my last Camino was that one sock wore through very quickly. By the end of the day, a brand new sock on my right foot would have holes. No pain and no blisters. All I can think is that I walk with an uneven gait. As I've gotten older the inequality has persisted and...
Less is more. It is amazing to discover all the things we can live without. Only one way to find out. If it does not work, you will have successfully discovered something that does not work.
Buen Camino
Bring a sleeping bag. If it's very warm sleep on top of it. If it is cold, sleep inside of it. There is no bedding at all in some albergues. Be prepared to take care of yourself.
Just a heads up: If you fly into JFK for a connecting flight, the chances are 50/50 that you'll have to go through security a second time. I avoid JFK like the plague. It was a great, modern airport when it flew it's first flight in 1948. Needs a few upgrades.
Great design! Personally, I'm wary of zippers. I have an old school Gregory Denali Pro that I used for work. The zipper I used the most (on the brain) blew out pretty quickly. Probably because it was exposed to the elements. The one other zipper on the inside is holding up well.
Keep us posted...
Well done! The best adage is,"less is more". I might add a very lihtweight pair of long johns and rain pants. If you can keep it to 18 liters or whatever that number was even better. Keep the sleeping bag, you may find a nice spot under a tree to sleep. Stranger things have happened.
I just came...
Rain Jacket and rain pants. Instead of a pack cover, I put a heavy duty trash can liner inside my pack. Pack covers have not been very useful to me. They are heavy and don't work so well. In the kinds of heavy, continuous rains day after day that I experienced while walking in Galicia there is...
Actually, all the newer down bags (at least the better ones) have treated plumage and the fabrics are moisture resistant. I wouldn't submerge one in a lake or anything but I've woken up to plenty of moisture on top of my bag and it's been fine. Also of note. Once on a ski trip in Wyoming, the...
