    Nordic walking vs. Trekking Poles

I continue to be amazed how few people I see in daily life walking with poles and yet people seem to find them essential on the camino

    Umbrellas

You'll end up carrying your umbrella for much, much longer than actually using it! I get by with a French foreign legion style hat - made by Lowe Alpine some years ago

    Problems with Carry-on Back Packs

From the TSA You are allowed to bring a quart-sized bag of liquids, aerosols, gels, creams and pastes in your carry-on bag and through the checkpoint. These are limited to travel-sized containers that are 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less per item. So, one bag for liquids and nothing that...

    Sleeping bag

For me, a sleeping bag liner and HH thermals would be a better and cheaper combination

Who has packed the lightest pack?

Merino wool is one way to avoid/reduce laundry (as well as covering a wide range of temperatures) I only bring one pair of trail runners - if wet, they dry out while walking

Who has packed the lightest pack?

Indeed I pack light so that I can carry as much water as I need - occasionally the water is heavier than the rest of my pack (well at the beginning of the day at least)

Who has packed the lightest pack?

Elastoplast is a UK/Aus brand name for plasters - the dressing strip is more padded then the thinner quasi-transparent plasters these days - search for "dressing strip" on Amazon, for example

Who has packed the lightest pack?

3kg including pack but then carry lots of water I walk during May or September and stay mainly in hotels but use albergues occasionally - having fewer items is probably my main theme although I pretty much choose the lightest available - and no electronics Gregory miwok 12L (c 600g) but well...

    Pocket knives on trains

Those of us in Europe remember the Marid train station bombing that killed over 190 people and injured some 2000 more - that's why the Spanish have such security on their longer-distance trains

How light is too light? Backpack question

I walk during May or September and stay mainly in hotels but use albergues occasionally - having fewer items is probably my main theme although I pretty much choose the lightest available - and no electronics Gregory miwok 12L (c 600g) but well built and has moisture-wicking harness Walking...

How light is too light? Backpack question

I disagree - sometimes comfort has a heavy price - the Kestrel 38 litre pack weighs over 1.5 kg - excluding liquid, I carry just under 3kg including a pack that weighs 600g

Do I carry a sleeping bag or an ultra light liner bag ?

For me, it's actually the bulk of the sleeping bag rather than weight that makes be bring the liner - I'd be relying on blankets if staying in albergues but could supplement with thermals if needed - closer to the date you can get a better idea on probable low temperatures

Walking Poles on the Primitivo. Yes or No.

I passed a group of fellow English pilgrims while they were going up a small slope on Friday - overhead one of them proudly saying how wonderful his poles were - since I never use poles, I made sure that I overtook them at an even quicker pace than normal

    Pocket knives on trains

The security scanning at larger Spanish stations is atypical of national European rail services and follows on from the Madrid train bombings in 2004 when some 190 people were killed - for those of you struggling to survive without your pocket knives, I can confirm that your teeth will do a...

    Time for Some Trail Runners

I walk in Merrell Trail Gloves - they're got Vibram soles, are very light and dry quickly - most importantly, they're really soft on the heels - for me the Hokas I tried were much too hard at the back of the shoe above the heel and gave me instant blisters

    Cheap but fine equipment

It looks like he is carrying a full-size post box with him - though I'm sure the hood would be excellent at keeping bees out!

    Back Pack for ultra light

Gregory Miwok 12 day-pack - it's on the heavy side (600g) but it's well made and I like the moisture-wicking harness and the side pockets for bottles
