Camino Aragonês notes and observations April '24

Fabulous and very thorough report - thanks! Amazing that while you were basically alone on the Aragonés, people were struggling for accommodations just a little ways away on the Frances! Well done. 👍

    DETOUR: bridge out near Canfranc

I’m very familiar with the beauty of that path (best section in the Aragonés in my opinion), but I was simply clarifying if the bridge had been replaced (no) or if it simply was a walkway to the riverbed which would be uncrossable with increased Spring snowmelt (yes?).

    DETOUR: bridge out near Canfranc

So the stairway leads down to the riverbed and then you cross on the rocks?

    Stages from Oloron-Sainte-Marie

Did you get a room there with a giant bathtub? 😂. It’s one of my wife’s favorite stops on that route! Pilgrim discount and really, really good food, too.

    Stages from Oloron-Sainte-Marie

Okay, not to be a gossip and we don’t need the prurient details, but spill a little bit of tea on what the main disagreement was!!!!

    Stages from Oloron-Sainte-Marie

While walking, I prefer not to take transit. This still leaves you a lot of different options or different lengths, but here are the simplest ones (mentioned by others but consolidated here): 1: Jaca to Santa Cruz on one day, then the next day walk from Santa Cruz to the monasteries and back...

    Stages from Oloron-Sainte-Marie

I may be one of the few pilgrims who have actually walked that alternative (but actually very old!) route up to the monasteries via Atares in the last 10 years or maybe even last few hundred years!!!! It is barely a path, mostly unmarked, and if it is at all rainy, you will be walking in ankle...

    A couple of Aragonés questions

If you are walking down the road from the new monastery, you’ll pass by the old one - no need for a bus! (Plus I doubt that there is one in October, anyways, as that is definitely not tourist season)

    A couple of Aragonés questions

A recent post on this site said the bridge was still out and one has to walk the road. With all of the snowmelt currently, there is no board crossing the high-flowing river. I would imagine it will be addressed once the water levels go down this summer.

    Stages from Oloron-Sainte-Marie

You left out the simplest: just walk! Walk Jaca to Santa Cruz, drop, your bag at the hotel, continue up to the monasteries, tour, and the walk down to your hotel. Or walk up and down prior to heading to Arres the next day. Or if that also sounds too long of a day, after staying the night in...

    Stages from Oloron-Sainte-Marie

    I believe it is seasonal.

    Stages from Oloron-Sainte-Marie

Your plan misses some of the iconic elements of the Aragon route. If you have the time, I’d add in a few extra steps as detailed below (my edits are in CAPITALS). Pueblo, Arres, and Ruesta are some very special albergues on the route that should not be missed. Also, SJdP deserves more than a...

Rucksack transport service along the Aragones?

Shipping your extra things to Pamplona is definitely the cheapest and easiest way so you are not having to repeat the process every day. On a side note, reconsider changing your start to Somport - it’s the most beautiful part of the route and you’ll miss it if you originate in Jaca. You can do...

Long distances between services on the Aragones

Somport Pass and San Juan de la Peña are regularly subject to snowstorms in early April, but the rest of the route would be walkable. You may get lucky and have a dry March/April and the pass is completely clear. If there is a storm, walking down from Canfranc Estacion or lower is always an...

Public transport and the Aragones Route: Need advice

Starting from OSM and adding those days is far superior to walking a few extra days on the CF once you finish the CA. As noted previously, transportation exists from Canfranc Estacion. Also, if the track work is done, the train from Zaragoza goes all the way to Estacion without having to change...

Long distances between services on the Aragones

For every stage on the Camino, plan to carry food and water for the day. If you happen to find a working font or open cafe, you have the option to not eat what you carry, but you’ll never suffer from a lack of services.

    Oloron-Sainte-Marie to Santiago

Another hour takes you to Canfranc Pueblo and the donativo there. I’d eat in Estacion, but sleep in Pueblo! OP planned to stay in Villanua, but I prefer the Elias donativo in tiny Pueblo.

    Oloron-Sainte-Marie to Santiago

Are you staying into Santa Cilia or Santa Cruz? If so, either are much closer to the monastery and a cheaper/faster trip by taxi. You could even taxi up and walk down (the road is very quiet in April and the views of the canyon worth the walk down).

    Oloron-Sainte-Marie to Santiago

Early April sees very very few pilgrims on that route, but there will be a lot of day hikers after Somport of the weather is nice. Bo need for reservations anywhere on the Aragon, even during Holy Week. Be sure to stay at the donativo albergue in Canfranc Pueblo - it’s a beaut!

    Travel from Barcelona to Somport

Av. de la Jacetania, 11, 22700 Jaca, Huesca, Spain Bus driver can make change for small bills. If you have time, definitely visit the church museum where they have preserved multiple wall paintings from abandoned churches in the area.
