I would walk to Puente Duero and stay at the Albergue there. The person who runs it, Alturo, is the president of the Villadolid association and he embodies the spirit of the Camino. It’s true, there isn’t much to see in town but it’s here you will find the best Albergue on the route. Buen...
I just walked it last year and found it to be not very well waymarked. I got lost a couple of times and had to rely on GPS to get me on the correct route. I used the Buen Camino app which showed my position in relation to the route. I also used Johnnie Walkers book on the Camino Madrid and found...
Oh I’m so happy for you! Congratulations! Well done! If you are like me, this accomplishment and the sense of self confidence it brought will serve you well moving forward. I miss those days on the Madrid route and I think of them often. It was truly a wonderful and life changing experience...
I loved the long walks with no other pilgrims. It gave me time to think uninterrupted. It was a nice contrast to what my other Camino experience was like.
It seemed like a daily challenge. I even contacted the writer of the Buen Camino app and Gad him change a portion that led into a drainage ditch. I vlogged about it in one of my videos. It really gave me a huge sense of accomplishment that only others who’ve done it would understand. Robin
Hang in there. When I finished I had a tremendous sense of accomplishment because this trail is not easy. If you don’t pay attention, you could get way off trail and if you get off trail, then you have to spend a lot more energy getting yourself back to where you’re supposed to be. So it’s...
Yes, I got off trail too several times. I had to watch my Camino app like a hawk n. That must have been a long day for you. Up the Fonfria pass you have to follow the white dots not the red or yellow ones but that seems to be not well advertised. I thought the historical signs up the mountain...
I did that walk in May and loved all of it! I made a series of videos about my journey and posted on YouTube. You can find it if you search Hey Robin Camino. I had to use my buen camino app for navigation because as you are finding out the path is not waymarked very well. I had to stop in...
I did the Madrid route a few months ago and had problems in Coco during a heatwave. I had to take a cab to a hotel in Olameda where I camped out until the heatwave subsided. It wasn’t fun but it made me stronger. I’d encourage you to keep trying with the municipal albergues. The one in Penaflor...
I too
I took a cab to Olmedo where I stayed at a four-star hotel, relatively affordable according to American standards. It was a good move as I spent an extra day there allowing the heatwave to pass and my body to recover. From there I walked to Valdestillas. Good luck!
Gosh, that would have made a huge difference! I think I’m struggling because I don’t speak the language. I think just when I figure all this out I’ll be done! Thanks for the info!
Hi Shaun, I’ve had a couple of trying days. There is nothing in Añe so don’t plan on staying there. Also, I lost out on finding a place in Coca because there was a big wedding there that weekend. It’s too bad too because I really wanted to see the castle there. Be sure to spend an extra night in...
Thank you so much! I don’t know if it’s stamina or stubbornness 😆. You are correct about the accommodations as I’ve had difficulties. It almost makes me wish to get back on the French route. In time it will happen. Enjoy the rest of your walk! Buen Camino!
Continuing on now that the heat wave has passed! I’m excited to travel to Valdestillas tomorrow and wondering if anyone else is on the Madrid route as well. I’ve had a couple of challenging segments with no places to stay in Ane or Coca, for different reasons. I’ve been posting videos on...
First timer to Madrid route here, which mountain do you all keep mentioning? I'll be starting my walk May 14th from Madrid and have booked my first week of accommodations. I'll take any tips I can get! Robin
