Le Puy or Not Le Puy?

From Figeac, which is worth exploring a bit itself, you can hop a train and easily visit Rocamadour. A great day at a great monument! I wouldn’t spend extra time in Conque, which has a great church but it’s really a three-hour town. Perhaps Cahor, just because it’s big enough to have different...

Le Puy or Not Le Puy?

I really don’t know what bushwalking means after reading this thread. You’re never off trail on this route. I’ve done the Le Puy route twice for sport. Many French are just on vacation, but you may be surprised to find some of them emerging from Mass as I was one day. One of the things I most...

    Le Puy musings and plannings....

Book your first night out of Le Puy, maybe two. That won’t lock you in very much but it will take some stress out of your first days. Looking at my diary that means St. Privat and Saugres. I made it to Figeac in 13 days, and your experience relative to mine suggests you can do that. Just think...

How-to guide to the Le Puy route

Thanks for this brilliant writeup! Laughed out loud a few times. Notes: I found the Miam Miam Dodo app easier to work with than you. Definitely found the way to get a list of accommodations in just one town or section of the route. Never had a problem finding a store open when I needed it...

Cathedral robbed at Oloron Sainte Marie

Update: Stolen items include chalices, crosses, monstrances, and at least one 16th-century cope, a gift to the local bishop from François 1er. There are security cameras at either end of the town, which may provide info. The thieves abandoned one of their two vehicles at the scene.

Cathedral robbed at Oloron Sainte Marie

Thieves used a car with a tree trunk strapped to it to smash down the door of a historic cathedral in south west France to steal several items of high value. https://www.thelocal.fr/20191104/thieves-ram-raid-historic-french-cathedral-to-steal-treasures/amp...

Where would you plan a rest day on the Le Puy route?

For a rest day, Conques is far too small IMHO. Definitely consider Figeac. I spent 2 hrs on. sunday morning doing laundry, then caught a train north to Rocamadour for a few hours of superb tourism at a spectacular site. It’s like a vacation from your vacation.

    Ups and downs

There’s nothing wrong with Decazeville. Not picturesque but you can find a nice lunch, friendly teens who have never met a foreigner, and various level accommodations. Compared to the dreary outskirts you trudge through on the way into Moissac it’s Giverny.

Walking from Le Puy to St Jean Pied de Port in Summer 2018

Thanks! and three cheers for Decazeville!

What's the best map for an overview of the Le Puy Route?

Get the Miam Miam app for your phone. You won’t need the book or any additional maps. If you’re carrying your phone anyway, it’s the lightest solution.

    Aire sur L'Adour to SJPDP

Pimbo had (in 2013) a small shop that offered a late afternoon wine tasting. It also sold lace. If you visit the church, there’s a simple monument with a list of the village’s WWI dead. As I recall, 3 of about 10 were named Theux.

    Aire sur L'Adour to SJPDP

In Pimbo, I loved Chambres d’Hôte Theux. A very warm home and Mme Theux cooks with love. The early morning walk out of Pimbo BTW was spectacular. In Aroue, Ferme Bohoteguia. Large and perhaps with an institutional feel, but spotless and another memorable meal. Simone does it all with great...

    5 days

In addition to deciding which stages to walk, consider the fact that you don’t want to lose time getting to and from the route. Conques is notorious for poor transport connections, while the Figeac to Cahors section recommended above gives you decent rail connections at either end. Much will...

How long is a piece of string ?

I walked this in 28 days, plus a rest day in Figeac and Cahors. Bill

    More accommodation questions

When I stayed at La Margueride, two of us shared a room with 4 beds and we had our own bathroom. We dined at a very affordable local resto.

    Booking Abbey Foy

In my experience the quality of the meal varies with the staff. Some people have been quite unhappy. The real drawback of the Abbey is that the dormitories can be quite large. I was in a room with 32 beds. With that many people, you’re guaranteed a snorer and a noisy early riser. My second time...

Les Sentiers Fleuris & Ferme du Barry (Peyre-en-Aubrac)

Very much enjoyed Sentiers Fleuris back in 2013. Very convivial dinner (with singing) and terrific breakfast. Though a vegetarian pilgrim insisted she’d be fine without special treatment, the host/chef produced an extra plate of plate of delicious beets we all enjoyed.

    Le Puy to Conques

I’m surprised not to see anyone recommending the Miam Miam Dodo version for iPhone. I used it a few years ago when it worked well enough, and I’ve just downloaded the latest version as I’m planning a hike for September, and it’s much improved. It breaks the route into two halves, before and...
