How to Make Arrangements for Visiting Pech Merle and Rocamadour

We caught the train from Figeac to go to Rocamadour. Yes, it’s about an hour’s walk to Rocamadour from the train station or you can catch a taxi. We walked on the way there and caught a taxi to the station on the return trip. The Peche Merle Caves are great. We walked there on the way. You need...

Best time to walk the Le Puy

We walked in 2012 starting on 26th April. It was wet, cold and muddy but we loved it. Spring flowers were everywhere. Then we walked again, starting at the end of August in 2015. The weather was very good, in fact almost perfect. The grass was still very green. Again we loved this route.

    Dinner in Le Puy

Have been to Le Puy before but ate in our gites both times. Am looking for recommendations for a good place to eat. Of course can book to eat at our accommodation but thought it might be good to go out before we begin walking.

Les Sentiers Fleuris & Ferme du Barry (Peyre-en-Aubrac)

Stayed at La Ferme du Barry and enjoyed the aligot. Comfortable beds and “over the top entertainment” in the dining area with the presentation of the aligot. Lots of fun.

    Day's Off?

Have walked this route twice. The first time we had factored in rest days in Conques and Moissac. There was not much to do after initial exploration of the towns. We also had 2 nights in St Jean Pied de Port before continuing to Santiago. The second time, we had 2 nights in Figeac, as we caught...

    Le Puy...first week?

The Le Puy route is stunning. I am sure you will love it. I'm not so good on hills, but this route is really not a problem. I have walked it twice before and will be walking from Le Puy next year, heading south on the Chemin de Robert Louis Stevenson, then from Arles to Santiago. Enjoy your...

The good, the bad and the ugly!

The monastery in Conques is an excellent place to stay. There are dormitory rooms and also smaller rooms. We were travelling in a group of 3 and had a room for 3. Very reasonable price for Demi pension.

Donkey friend from Le Puy to Figeac?

We saw a few people with donkeys on this route. If you get MiamMiam Dodo guide for the Le Puy route, it indicates which gites will take donkeys or horses. We stayed in a couple that did.

Le Puy via de Podiensis- sleeping bags and what type of wet weather gear?

Both times we were there, there were no blankets that I could see. Maybe you can ask for them. The first time was in April and the room was heated. The second time was at the end of August and even though a little cool, our sleeping bag liners were enough. We were lucky that the August/...

Le Puy via de Podiensis- sleeping bags and what type of wet weather gear?

We have walked this route twice and not taken a sleeping bag. The first time we started in April. There was lots of rain and plenty of mud. I was very glad I wore boots so that the mud didn't seep in as it would have with shoes. We stayed mainly in gites that we booked ahead. They all had...

    Questions about Le Puy

Have walked this beautiful route twice. The first time we had 2 nights in Le Puy,2 in Conques and 2 in Moissac. The second time, we had only one night in each of these places. The only rest day was in Figeac as previously stated, so we could go to Rocamadour. As you are limited for time, have...

    Questions about Le Puy

Yes Conques is beautiful. Also, if you have an extra night in Figeac you can take the train to Rocamadour on your rest day. This is touristy as well but stunning. There is a 4km walk from the station or you can get a taxi. Figeac is beautiful as well. Plenty of places to eat.

    Chanaleilles or Le Sauvage?

Le Sauvage definitely. Have stayed there twice and both times were excellent.

    Reflections on the Le Puy

Hi Hilary, Last year, we had 85 days for our trip. We spent 2 nights in Paris, then train to Le Puy. Walked to SJPDP then caught the train to St Jean de Luz where we had 2 nights before walking into Spain and walking del Norte. Upon reaching Santiago we decided to forego walking to...
