Shelters operated by the Sociedad Anónima de Xestión del Xacobeo located along the different paths that comprise the Pilgrim’s Way have registered a high rate of overnight stays from January to November this year, rising up to 327,450 pilgrims (overnight stays).
This reflects an increase of 6.1% on the total number of pilgrims stayed overnight in shelters last year, which was 308,476.
The path which received the largest number of walkers was the French Way, where there are 21 shelters, which recorded 223,152 overnight stays.
After that it was the Portuguese Way, with 27,907 overnight stays;
the Vía de la Plata, with 23,752;
the Way Fisterra-Muxía, with 22,071;
the Northern Way, with 16,541;
the Primitive Way, with 11,388;
and the English Way, with 3,639 overnight stays.
The next Holy Year begins on 1 January 2010 and in order to avoid problems in peak season if the number of pilgrims keeps going up, the head of the technical office of the Xacobeo, Jose Manuel Pichel, ensures that the Culture Department will double the number of rooms in the shelters through specific agreements with some municipalities; so there will be temporary shelters in areas where more number of pilgrims are expected.
