Good for you! If you are looking for a clean, comfortable and super well located pension, try this one: http://www.hostalromero.net/

It's on the main drag, practically across the street from El Corte Ingles. It's on the 2nd floor of a residential building with large, heavy wooden doors.

It's part of the pensiones on the Tourist Information list.

Now it becomes more real! Liz, do you have an estimate on your days in Santiago? It would be great fun to meet. I'll bet I'll be later than you, though, right now it looks like about July 12 or 13.

Anemone's recommendation is a good one if you want to stay in a more modern part of the city, near the Corte Ingles is a convenient location for commerce. If you are more inclined to the old part of town, I frequently stay in the Hostal Arcos, http://www.hostal-arcos.com, run by two very nice hard-working young guys. For a little more of a splurge, the Vetusta can't be beat, though it's not right in the old center. http://www.hotelvetusta.com (sort of between the old center and the hostal that Anemone recommended). And then the super splurge, the Reconquista. http://www.eurostarshoteldelareconquista.com/EN/hotel.html I've never stayed there, but I've bought a stay for my son and wife there and it was surprisingly affordable. It's where parts of VickyCristinaBarcelona was filmed and the doorman does his best to keep out tourists. I found that a little offputting, but the staff inside was really quite nice and helpful when I wanted to set up some special things for the honeymoon trip. I love Oviedo, bet you will too. It's great that you will have so much time to poke around. And the sidra street Al mentions is the Gascona.

Buen camino, Laurie

Liz - I'm also planning a Camino Primitivo in June, but will be a week behind you!

Laurie - thanks for all your tips. It was actually your writing about the Primitivo that first put it on my radar!

buen camino

Laurie and others, Thanks for the tips about staying in Oviedo. We decided to splurge a little and stay at the Vetusta. We have struggled a bit with jet lag in recent years so we wanted to be quiet and comfortable for a couple nights. This coming semester promises to be pretty crazy for me so I'm trying to cover as many details as possible before school starts up again.

Laurie, we will arrive in Santiago about 6/22 or so. We plan to walk to Muxia and we have to be at Rabanal by 6/29. We are at Rabanal until 7/17 and then go from Astorga to Madrid. So I think we will miss you. Drat -- it would be lovely to meet! Liz

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.
