Recent news reports say the AVE project is being put on the back burner until the crisis eases, at least the Madrid-Oviedo line. The roadbed is all finished and the tunnels dug and fences erected for miles and miles, but no sign of tracks. For now, it is a private highway for people driving cars with ADIF and Renfe paint jobs.

This might take a while...

Hola Rebekah - sorry my Spanish geography is not that great. Which part of the Camino does the Madrid-Oviedo AVE affect??

I saw part of the new AVE being built from Madrid to Badajoz (back in May) and that was going ahead at what appeared to be full-steam. I have read (and saw) the AVE construction between Zamora and Ourense (but that was only from the existing railway line). Buen Camino

saint mike, Madrid to Oviedo is a good bit farther north and east than the part you saw. I haven´t seen many reports on the project in the news lately... I do know the lines that were supposed to connect Spain to Portugal were abandoned two years ago, when Portugal pulled out.
