anyone have any recommendations for small, cosy hotels in central leon for our first night stay? any advice much appreciated!

Hostal Orejas, close to busstation and Camino. Wouldn't call it atmospheric but price-quality very good, quiet too.

Hostal Guzman behind the Guzman Palace and just off the Camino after it leaves the cathedral.
