Can anyone please tell me if there are any formalities with crossing the border from France into Spain, passport control etc...

yes I can; no there aren't. If you mean on the Bentarte route, there is a little plinth with Navarra on it (though many people miss it); the border itself is crossed via a cattle grid.

The same is true when crossing the border Portugal - Spain, no checks are done.

That said, in Spain you are supposed to have valid ID papers on you at all time. For someone outside the EU that would be a passport.
