Caminho Portugues - Coastal or Central Route for 2017?

Time of past OR future Camino
Caminho Portugues, Oporto-ScC (2017)
Hello! I am new to the forum. I am part of a group that's in the early stages of planning a trip in the summer of 2017. We will probably have 4-5 people, ranging in age from mid-20s to mid-60s. My question right now is whether we should plan on the Coastal or Central route for our Caminho Portugues. I am interested in the historical, artistic, architectural, and religious significance of these respective paths, as I am a literary historian. However, my companions are traveling with their own interests and focii. Some are religious, others decidedly not. Please advise. Obrigada.

3rd Edition. More content, training & pack guides avoid common mistakes, bed bugs etc
At first reaction at your question I should say follow the central routes. Historically spoken you partly will follow an old Roman road, here and there excavations are found.
What I have seen from the coastal are fishermans villages and places with summerhouses.
Porto is an interesting town and so is Vigo on the coastal. The central route has some interesting places. You'll find some medieval fortresses.
In Galicia Spain you also find some interesting places and the Roman road is there too.
Santiago has a medieval center.
Maybe others on this forum can give you some more information.
You 'll still have some time. I can tell you more about the coastal next year , intending to walk that part.
The central I allready walked.

Best regards
Albertinho

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
My vote for coastal. You would pick back up with the main route at Redondela and end up with a varied experience that should appeal to the mix

Thanks for the feedback. I think we will try the coastal route, particularly to avoid the industrial area coming out of Porto. Cheers!

I am interested in the same walk ... would like to join others that will be doing in ... keep in touch

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.
