Hi, I’m planning to start Camino del Norte from Irun on the 19/05 and I reserved some accommodations up to Bilbao between albergue and pensiones but how difficult is to get a bed in a Albergue municipal, for example Deba.

The reason I’m asking is that i don’t want to run like a headless chicken to get a bed or paying a fortune for accommodation. I really want to enjoy the Camino and be able to take my time, though I can keep a good pace but without stress

I have been in CF three times and the biggest difference I’m finding is the limited offer of accommodations for pilgrims.

In Deba you do have to register at the tourist office before going to the albergue.

This is the translation of what Gronze says:

It is necessary to go in advance to register at the Municipal Information Office, at Ifarkale street, 3

(Hours: From April to September: 10:00-14:00 and 16:00-20:00 (Sundays and holidays closed in the afternoon ) / Rest of the year: 10:00-14:00 and Friday and Saturday afternoons 17:00-20:00). If it is closed, the Municipal Police attends

We walked one year later than Trecile, 2019. We arrived in Deba just after the tourist office closed for the day (weekend), so I went to the police station. They were perplexed — no one had heard that they were supposed to help us register for the Albergue. But they were very nice, and told us just to go back to the Albergue and wait for the volunteer to return from their siesta break. We did that, in fact took showers while we were waiting, and registered with no problem when the hospitalaro returned. Of course, things may have changed again in 4 years…

It really depended on the number of beds. Albergues with very few beds were harder to get into. The larger ones were no problem.

And regarding Deba - definitely double check the tourist office hours before arrival so you can ensure you arrive when they are open - you are supposed to register there and they give you a code to let yourself into the albergue. A volunteer did eventually show up - but the gentleman wasn't at the albergue for very long when I was there.

I think the police station only registers on Sunday afternoons and on holidays - which is why the above poster might have been told to go back to the albergue and wait.

Last September and October (so 2022) there were a few times where accomodations were not available along various places on del Norte route and I ended up sleeping outside on my plastic sheet... I found that since COVID a number of albergues were closed and there were MANY more pilgrims so ended up haivng to reserve almost everywhere the day ahead....
 
There should be few problems with accommodation in May. Arriving at your destination each day by about 1 pm should be fine. There were a couple times I was the only person at the albergue ... or one of 5. There was no need to rush from one place to another ... one of the reasons I chose the Norte.

I'm looking forward to experiencing the Norte in May/June. I previously walked it in July, and there were definitely quite a few pilgrims scrambling for beds.
 
If you have a hard time finding a place to stay, call or go the local Tourist Office, they usually have a list of places with available rooms. You can find the office and it's # on Google maps.

I was in Deba end of September.
I believe The Municipal has 60 beds. I was number 57. Whew
It seemed the town was full .
If you want a bed in Deba try to be a chicken on that day.
Just sayin......
