Just remember that the person tabbing down the path in front of you might be plugged into their iPod or similar, and will not hear your approach!!

On the rougher paths, the walkers are liable to switch sides of the pathway without warning in order to get better footing, and more than once I nearly had a set of tyre tracks up my back as the riders on their very fancy all terrain bikes approached at the speed of light making almost no sound at all until the last few yards.

Tends to jolt one out of ones state of quiet self meditation!!!.

Get a loud horn, not a tingly bell!

quiet meditation listening to an ipod??

Being a sad old git, I tend to listen to gentle classical stuff when plodding along along solo, and leave the hard driving garage music to my sons.

That is assuming that one managed to find the only power socket in the refuge to charge the iPod amongst the forest of mobile phone chargers!!

One looks back fondly to the days when all you had to do was change the batteries, now you have to carry the ruddy chargers which are usually larger and heavier than the item they are charging!

My son was carrying 1 x iPod + charger (both stolen at the Burgos rufugio) 1 x digital camera + charger, 1 x Blackberry + charger, 1 x Nokia phone + charger (in case the Blackberry dies which it did at Sarria)

My son had an ultra lightweight sleeping bag flown in from the States, but the 200 grams he saved was compensated for by the kilo of chargers!!

Who said progress was a good thing. At least he left my GPS unit behind in London before he left.

The Old Fella (me) who was a soldier for many years worked on the basis of travelling light, and my rucksack and contents weighed just on 7kgs.
