3rd Edition. More content, training & pack guides avoid common mistakes, bed bugs etc
Drop by a tourist information office. Walking the Portuguese Coastal I found they quite often had info on small hostels and pensions that weren't listed in guide books or on booking.com and would even phone to check on availability.

Booking.com has beds for 38euro. But that's a lot to pay for a dorm! Anywhere further up the road?

Technical backpack for day trips with backpack cover and internal compartment for the hydration bladder. Ideal daypack for excursions where we need a medium capacity backpack. The back with Air Flow System creates large air channels that will keep our back as cool as possible.

€83,-
Lots of places in bilbao. ? Bus there for the night. Hopefully tourist info will help

High tourist season on that part of the Norte. San Sabastian and a couple of other spots are hugely popular with tourist....and if you are there now you can easily see why.

Many people "rent rooms" and do list with local office or just walk around and look for a sign (typically in German "zimmer ..."

San Sebastian is a major destination for all of Europe and finding anything for under €40 will be a bonus.

You may try looking south of there rather than just west. You can always return to the spot you took a ride from.

If forced to spend more than you hope for maybe try and make the most of it...... laundry in the sink, maybe two showers... sleep in?

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
We encountered the same problem when we passed San Sebastian in 2014, the tourist office sorted us out.

There is always plenty of accommodation around, I walked in the summer and we heard rumours that towns were booked out, yes the public albergue were full, but there was plenty of accommodation in a 3km radius of the town.

It is too late to help Patchnomad, but I don’t think there is an “albergue” that pilgrims know of in San Sebastián or Bilbao. There might be other lower-cost lodging available.

I passed by the city twice. The first time I stayed in a donation-based religious group run housing in the mountain just before descending to the city, and the second time in a hotel in the city. The city’s old section is well known for excellent pintxos so if you happened to stay in San Sebastián, don’t miss the opportunity.

Ask a bartender. Often they can help you. Same thing happened to me in SS. The bartender’s mother had a spare room.
