Currently on camino del norte some guide books say 30-35k to bilbao from Gernika, can anyone advise correct distance snd how long it took, what is the route like ie elevation, type of walking etc,,,,thank you

€2,-/day will present your project to thousands of visitors each day. All interested in the Camino de Santiago.
There is an albergue in Lezama. Nothing else around, but there is an albergue, about 10km outside of Bilbao (21.8 Km from Gernika) . You can also take the train into Bilbao from there. 20 beds, donativo. Here's the elevation map to Lezama, just one real uphill over 3.4 km to go up 230 meters. From Lezama, after 4km there's another hill, up 300m over 3km, so again, nothing dramatic.

Hope this helps.

The biggest climb is just before you reach Bilbao - Monte Avril - up and over (and steeply down) the hills that look over the city and quite a vista. The stage starts off in pleasant country but gradually becomes more road. After Lezama it's quite built up for a while before you turn off to climb the final hill. My guide says it's 35.5km in all and I think that was about right, although much depends on where you are going to finish in the city...

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
Thanks jim and ivar just wondering hiw long it would take ? Is it 30k or 35k....thanks john

21.8 + 11.2= .... 33, according to Eroski.

John:

How long it will take depends on your pace. ( ie: 4km's per hour = 8-9 hours). I would recommend you stay in Lezema if the Albergue is open. There are some other options for sleep accommodations in Lezema but they are off Piste. Check the Gronze.com guide.

In regards to 30 or 35 km's, it would depend on where you star and stop. Each guides has slightly different distances.

Joe

I walked out of Gernika this afternoon and am at an Albergue Eskerika. A lot of uphill and Rocky trails.

What you must know is this: the albergue in Bilbao is reached only after walking 4-5 kms in the city itself. Here it's crucial to look up if your guidebook includes distances walked in towns. My didn't. I thought I was there after coming down from Monte Avril, just to keep on walking for at least 4 more kms...
