Ever wondered what the Hostal de los Reyes Católicos Parador looks like on the inside?

It's even nicer when you stay there. Definitely worth one night at least, if only to celebrate the end of one's Camino in the lap of luxury. They'll do your laundry for you - even your sleeping bag. And the breakfast buffet is to die for...

I promised myself that I'd stay here for one night if I completed the Camino, and last May did just that. However, I was actually very disappointed with the hotel as it certainly did not live up to it's perceived 5 star reputation. While it's a beautifully preserved building there were areas, such as the chapel and sacristy, which should have been on show but were used for furniture storage. And the four lovely cloisters were quite unkempt.

My favourite Parador is San Marcos in Leon. Apart from being cheaper then the Santiago Parador, including the same but cheaper breakfast, the overall maintenance of the hotel is much better, and the historic areas such as the cloister are just a joy to wander around. Staff were also much friendlier and helpful.

Just my view.

It was full when we tried to book...ah well.

We had to settle for an extremely nice bottle of cava in the bar instead.

I had a jolly good nosy around, even though I looked like a tramp!!! Tea on the terrace is well worth it.
