My daughter got married in a very old church igreja matriz de sao clemente in Loule north west of Faro and there were 2 scallop shells engraved on the altar. Does this mean it is on the portugese way.

It may have been at one time but I think at present the Camino Portugues begins no farther south than Lisbon.

Yes. There was a route from Faro. See: http://www.csj.org.uk/map.htm
This passes through Beja, Alpalhao, Guarda, Braga and Ourense, so it doesn't join up to the Central Camino Portuguese which is currently waymarked from Lisbon to Porto and then via Barcelos, Ponte de Lima, and Tui to Santiago.

May be, but it's not marked before Lisbon. From Lisbon is perfectly marked and maintained.

Buen Camino,
