I agree, unless your flight arrives early, catching the 14:50 is impossible. Better settle for a later train anyway. We land in Madrid at 14:20 and will continue on to Oviedo, carry-on only. The train times for Oviedo from Chamartin are 14:50, 17:30 and 18:26. I know the train to Chamartin from T4 is about 15 minutes. Are our odds of catching the 14:50 pretty nil even if all the stars align and things arrive/depart on time? Of course, the other two times are twice as much. I am assuming waiting until we get there to buy our tickets would be ill-advised?
Camino Madrid, a few steps on Francés (Sahágun to León) and then Camino San Salvador ;-)
There is also an Alsa bus from Madrid Barajas to Oviedo at 15.45 or 16.45.
Leaves from Terminal 4.
The smart thing, of course. Just hate to get there and find we have a pre-bought ticket for a later train but could have made the earlier one. A later train will just give us time to eat a good meal, I suppose.I agree, unless your flight arrives early, catching the 14:50 is impossible. Better settle for a later train anyway.
Could fly!

My plane from Dubai left half an hour late, so it was touch and go whether I would catch my connection in Madrid for Oviedo. I had to race...caminoconfidential.blogspot.com
I am assuming a bus would take longer and negate the earlier departure? Just trying to not arrive so late in Oviedo. But, being as it is Spain it might not be such a big deal!
Might as well take it easy? Santiago isn’t going anywhere. The smart thing, of course. Just hate to get there and find we have a pre-bought ticket for a later train but could have made the earlier one. A later train will just give us time to eat a good meal, I suppose.

You may want to consider flights. I am heading from Madrid to Oviedo in September. About 3 hours after landing in Madrid, there is a one hour flight to Oviedo, so I should be able to make that. The cost is only marginally more expensive than the train. From what I understand, the Oviedo airport is a ways out of the city, so there is a 45 minute bus ride into the city which costs 8 euros. Good luck!
The train trip is stunning. You get to see the most amazing scenery as you get closer to Oviedo. I would not have missed it for anything
Time on bus is 6.30. Slowest train also 6h.
Even if you land at Madrid T4 at the proposed arrival time, leaving the plane and entering the railway takes more time. The same applies to the 14:45h bus. 15:45h looks OK without delays.
Waiting for the elevator already feels like 5min. Picking up luggage took 15-20min in Madrid, while on other airports it can be faster than you. The shuttle bus from T1/2/3 to T4 takes 10-15min plus the time you wait for one.
Trains from Madrid to Oviedo sometimes need only 4:19h. As far as I remember you arrive almost at the same place in Oviedo with either bus or train.
The bus isn't as slow as it seems. Unfortunately it goes down to Estacion Sur and Moncloa before they leave town. To compare you should add the train ride from T4 to Chamartin.
Crossing Madrid in Metro takes a lot of time as well, but you can find lower bus rates from other terminals. Sometimes that compensates the 5€ metro ticket.
Consider breaking your journey up. I would suggest Leon catch a train there it gives you a bit of time in a great city and then you can get an early alsa bus to Oviedo the next morning, if you needed to walk that day you could set off after lunch and have a very short etapa of either 10 km or 16km.
