Pilgrim Statistics 2013 - Numbers reduced in Holy Week this

I've just posted the statistics for arriving pilgrims from 1 January 2013 - 31 March 2013. The big story is that this year in Holy Week over 1200 less pilgrims arrived than in the previous year. But the weather has been dreadful and every day pilgrims had to battle through torrential rain. Given that Holy Week is traditionally the time for Spanish pilgrims to make the pilgrimage it is perhaps no surprise numbers are down because they more easily have access to Spanish weather reports and don't have to book flights well in advance.

It is necessary to point out that Holy Week in 2012 fell during the first week of APRIL whereas this year in the last week of MARCH. Yet 1'200 less arrivals for the week alone in 2013 vs. 2012 is remarkable.
The March arrivals in Santiago this year have been more than double those of 2012 (7'229 vs. 3'260). Of these, 65% walked the Camino Francés and 21 % the Camino Portugués, and 61% were from within Spain, 39% from abroad.
Considering the bad weather (which is still persisting these days), numbers picked up quite a bit this last month.

Unless arrivals increase dramatically, this March will have less than 3,000, well below the 7,229 in March 2013. Easter was the first week of April, 2013, so that increased the numbers that month, but it still may be a dramatic drop, perhaps signalling a declining popularity for the pilgrimage.

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
