The Vdlp/Sanabrés is probably the best camino I have walked when it comes to monumental cities. If you are starting in Sevilla, how can you not spend a day or two there?! But once you are walking, Mérida (Roman theater and ruins), Cáceres (gorgeous Renaissance core), Salamanca (old university city and plaza mayor that is one of the two most beautiful in Spain), Zamora (26 Romanesque churches, which may not mean anything to you, but I love them, and a restored castle, great main square, just a gorgeous city), and Ourense (public thermal baths, Roman bridge, romanesque Cathedral) are all great places with lots to see and do. Some of my favorite cities in Spain. Puebla de Sanabria is a cutesy touristy town that is very pleasant.
But as people always comment on the forum, if you need a rest day, you should take it where you need it. The previous poster said she took a day off in Galisteo to do nothing (that’s lucky, because there is absolutely nothing to do in Galisteo
), but she had a great day. She was smart to take the day off when she needed it.
I personally am not a big fan of rest days. If I’m injured, I will take one, but I miss the walking too much to do it regularly. I do try to plan my day so I will walk into the great places early, before 1 or 2, so as to have time to see the sites.
I always build in a few extra days for rest days, and then if I don’t take them, I can continue on to Finisterre or Muxia at the end!
Buen camino, you will love the Vdlp. I’ve been there three times in the spring, and the wild flowers and green meadows are just stunning!
