San Roque ...a novena for healing

Many who have walked have encountered San Roque in Spain ( San Rocco in Italy ) , oftentimes mistaken for St James as he is depicted dressed as a pilgrim. He is seen wearing pilgrim hat, carrying a staff, often with a shell...but he is accompanied by a dog and revealing wounds on his leg. He is the patron saint of disease and healing, epidemics.....All of us can take a look back at our photos and have a closer look at San Roque. We have been called to know him and ask for his intervention during these troubling times.
Here is the Novena ( each day, 9 days )...I've found the words themselves especially healing.

There are lots of statues and spots dedicated to him in France. As the patron saint invoked against the plague, lots of spots in Europe got named after him.

I was reliably informed (in another thread many moons ago) that the statue at Alto de San Roque (as shown in OP’s first post) is not of St Roque, but of a generic pilgrim. He never made it to Spain, but did go to Rome.

"Coming into Italy during an epidemic of plague, he was very diligent in tending the sick in the public hospitals at Acquapendente, Cesena, Rimini, Novara,[9] and Rome, and is said to have effected many miraculous cures by prayer and the sign of the cross and the touch of his hand....Ministering at Piacenza he himself finally fell ill. He was expelled from the town; and withdrew into the forest, where he made himself a hut of boughs and leaves, which was miraculously supplied with water by a spring that arose in the place; he would have perished had not a dog belonging to a nobleman named Gothard Palastrelli supplied him with bread and licked his wounds, healing them. Count Gothard, following his hunting dog that carried the bread, discovered Saint Roch and became his acolyte."

I wondered why the statue on Alto San Roque didn't look like the San Roque I expected. I thought it was just me...lol Thank you for clarifying. I believe he was born in France...?
 
His father was somebody important in the Montpellier area. Roch had no interest in being a Lord, causing his kin to figure he was off his rocker, and thus when he returned from Rime, they locked him up forever.

[Details are fuzzy, so that’s the off the cuff story.]

I've read in many sources that the saint was born with a red cross birthmark on his chest. I wonder why it is never depicted on any statues or paintings...well, none I've seen...
