Time of past OR future Camino
St Jean Pied de Port - Estella Sept 2011, Estella - Burgos May 2012, Burgos - Astorga Sept 2013
We need to get back to Astorga to recommence our walk in September 2014. Flight times (from Dublin) and train times not really working out well for us. Anyone else ever gone this route? any tips.

I took the bus from Santiago to Astorga once - I think it took about 6 hours including a stop in Ponferrada for lunch. The bus station in Astorga is very close to the centre, right behind the cathedral.

ALSA operates buses from Santiago bus station to Astorga.

Otherwise try flying to Madrid and take the Renfe train or ALSA bus to Astorga.
 
the timings are all over the place unfortunately, we are flying in from Dublin

Hi Marge,

I went from Astorga to SDC in Sept 2011 and also flew from Dublin.Journey details were as follows :

Flight from Dublin to Madrid - Departed Dublin 6.20am and arrived Madrid Barajas Airport 9.55am (Terminal 2)

I then went to Terminal 4 (via the Airport courtesy shuttle bus) where I got an ALSA bus to Astorga.The slight downside is that the bus to Astorga did not leave the Airport until 1.45pm so I had a few hours to kill however it meant that I did not have to go into Madrid city centre to connect with the bus.The bus went direct to Astorga and arrived at 6pm.Lovely way to travel and cost €32. I was in time to get a bed (almost the last bed I think !!) at the Alb.Siervos de Maria http://www.caminodesantiagoastorga.com/ but if arriving at this time now you might want to book alternative accomodation (small pension or private Albergue) just to make sure you have a bed for your first night.

From Dublin (timing is everything), if you can get to Santander, you can take a train to Palencia, then transfer to a train to Leon/Astorga.
This was my planned route if we had to break up our Camino into 2 phases. Santander to Astorga should be about 6 to 8 hours, I'm guessing.
 
That's how we came home last Sept actually, will have a look. Thank you.

Back again! We have booked our flights to Madrid for Sept 2nd, we will then take the airport bus to Astorga. Takes about 4hrs 50 mins ( ahhhhhhhhh). Anyway, should get u to Astorga by 7.30pmish? which is fine for erly strt the next day. If we could hook up with other pilgrims going to Astorga would there be any other way, that might not take o long, of getting to Astorga?
 

Some trains make the journey in 3:20. They leave from Chamartin.
