Hey Guys AGAIN.....
10 weeks out YIppe but also little nervous.
I will be spending two nights one day in SJPDP before leaving on the 1 June.
Can anyone recommend accommodation, would like to be central and in the thick of it so to speak. But nice and comfortable and typical French place I guess, don't want modern.
I have three goals in SJPDP before leaving 1 June
Send of luggage to IVAR ( stand by IVAR)
Get my credentials- passport office
And get a buff, of course my shell ( my little useful souvenir)
Oh yes and meet some people of course

2024 edition: The Brierley Camino Frances Guide
The first edition came out in 2003 and has become the go-to-guide for many pilgrims over the years. It is shipping with a Pilgrim Passport (Credential) from the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela.

Well, I would say mid range or potentially little higher but nothing like penthouse hehehe 3-4 ️

I you want to meet people, the best place would be an albergue.... The 'Kaserna' is central, nice and comfortable AND a typical Basque house....
They were donativo but a minimum donation of €20 suggested (€24 the year I stayed, depends on the hospitaleros). A communal dinner and breakfast are included.

Sure, you can do that too, not too optimistic at all. It can depend on what time of the day you are arriving, and at what time of the year. The pilgrim office stays open late and will help. Places get full in mid-season, but the pilgrim office will phone around for you. I arrived another year in June with 2 buddies, walking from Le Puy to Santiago (never booking ahead). We asked in the pilgrim office if they knew of a triple room, not an albergue. They found something in the suburbs, but we decided to look around ourselves. Further down the street there are a couple of houses with “Rooms” signs outside, not listed at the pilgrim office. We knocked on the door, and a super-friendly old lady gave us a large triple room, with a bathroom down the hall, for 25 euros per person. It was perfect.

Not sure, but I made my reservation through booking.com 2 1/2 months before I leave on April 12th and things wew already filling up fast...However, I keep hearing that the pilgrim office has a daily up to date list of all openings and they help you find a bed. If that's true you should have no problem. I'm a group of 4, so was less optomistic, hence my early booking.
 
So often there are exceptions to the norm...one of the cool things about this forum! You just provided us with one.
 
2 days ago I reserved Gite Azkorria at €90 for a double bed room in the confusion of the moment by an alert "some other people are looking and you will be the winner." Immediately 10% was paid from my card number. I regret my mistake not to follow a principle of a pilgrim 'At albergue on the camino.'

Gite Ultreia near the old Church at the bottom of the hill (which you will climb up and down several times!) was our overnight - very friendly Basque woman running it at the time. Remember the phrase "Bide On" (Be-Day Own) which is Basque for Buen Camino. While in town wander south along the trail next to the river - around the corner is a nice old Romanesque bridge with benches - perfect spot for reflection before your walk.
 
Belairi, across from the Pilgrim's Office always offers a warm welcome, an excellent dinner, and an opportunity to meet others. I still keep in touch with friends I met there on my first night several years ago.
