Sore ankle

celined

New Member
Hi everyone,
It has been 2 weeks that I am on the camino Frances. The front of one of my ankle hurts a bit especially when I start walking. I am aware that it could be linked with dehydration. When it rains I don't drink much. I believe it is a common problem, I have met people with the same symptoms. Any advice? No pain no gain I know but I would prefer to do the right thing! Gracias y buen camino !

Down bag (90/10 duvet) of 700 fills with 180 g (6.34 ounces) of filling. Mummy-shaped structure, ideal when you are looking for lightness with great heating performance.

Generically, you have some sort of inflammation. You can use ice and anti-inflammatories to reduce the pain. Ankle and knee pain are common, but you need to be comfortable with the distinction between pain that comes from irritation and pain that comes from an injury that may get worse with use. Only you can determine that! I don't expect my feet and ankles to not hurt, so I treat them and keep moving. That may or may not be good advice for you.

You should seek professional help. A doctor or at least ask your chemist.

Buen Camino!

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

Celinde - not much fun, having that sort of pain. You already know the answer - stop walking! Rehydrate yourself, use an anti-inflammatory cream .. the whole drill - but mainly stop, give yourself a break.
If you haven't damaged your ankle in some way - and if you think you have, do go to a doctor (who will most likely tell you to stop, and use an anti-inflammatory cream) - there is another possibility; as it is on the top part of the ankle ... is it where your boot laces tighten? Feet get larger when on Camino and you could be tightening your boots too much. Try loosening them right up on that foot, even if it feels sloppy and weird, and see if the pain still comes when you walk ... if it doesn't - well, problem solved .. if it does - well, you know what you need to do.

If you are anywhere near a good supermarket see if you can get a 'sports' drink (lots) - they replace the electroyltes; sometimes water is just not enough. If you are keeping your liquids down because of the lack of places to pee - well, tsk tsk ....

I do hope that it is just the boot problem, and I do hope that you have the time to stop and take care of yourself.

Be kind to yourself Celinde

Buen Camino

Thanks everyone for your all your advice and I apologise for my late answer!
I had an infection, severe cellulitis and I had to take antibiotics for some time. But after that it was like a walk in the park!
For those who are still on the trail, enjoy it, it is hard going back home!

Glad to hear your infection cleared up. What I noticed is that obviously hydration plays a role but so does bloodflow to your ankles and legs . I would look into getting a supportive ankle brace sleeve because it not only supports you, but tends to regulate bloodflow well to your extremities. It's more important for me as I have bad circulation and get cold easily.

Went hiking this weekend and remembered others might have the same recurring problem with their ankles as me. I ended up ordering a new one through Amazon Prime the sleeve shown on Television: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00YIAG6R4/?tag=casaivar02-20 and it didn't bother me the entire trip. Granted your swelling was from an infection, but people with diabetes (I'm borderline) or bad bloodflow really need quality gear.
