Three Weeks: Where to begin?

I'll have three weeks to walk on the Camino Frances. Where would you recommend I begin? Is Pamplona too far from Santiago de Compostela? I will be flying in and out of Madrid and would like to spend a couple days in Madrid on the way out. I'm an avid hiker and backpacker.

Hola Tom! I would say that 3 weeks is not enough time to get from Pamplona to Santiago, especially if you want to spend a few days in Madrid on both ends of your trip. How far do you think you can walk each day? Maybe you can start from Leon? Or do what I will be doing (& others have done)--do the Camino in 2 or 3 trips. When do you plan on going?

You might want to get the Camino Frances guide available from the CSJ in the UK, as well as the Brierly Camino Frances Guide (available on Amazon).

You can also look at the Mundicamino website, which breaks down the Camino Frances into sections & provides outlines & details of the route & accomodations available in each section.

Hi Tom,

Three Weeks Where to Begin?

It really depends on how far you want to walk in a day, and how many days you want to spend on the Camino.

Then you can figure it out with just about any guidebook or site. Burgos is about 21 days out from Santiago, Leon 13, based on the Beierley book.

Check out the Camino Portugues leading on to the Camino to Fisterra , this last one is pure magic, out of this world...

If you want to do El Camino Frances, perhaps Burgos to Santiago would be a nice idea? Trouble is, you miss the beautiful bit between SJPP and Burgos. How about doing it in two bits?

Edited bit: If you do decide to do Burgos to Santiago, I'd recommend getting the Alsa bus service from Madrid to Burgos. It's cheaper and quicker than the train.

Given three weeks I'd walk from Leon to SdC (can be done in two weeks) then onwards to Finisterra. Burgos to SdC would be pushing it a bit.
