I am new to veganism, although have been veggie for may years. I've just started a blog (see below) for my Camino, which will start on 14 May. Any other vegans walking out there? I think I have a fairly good idea what to expect & what to prepare for food-wise, but any useful tips gratefully received.

Many thanks

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

Thanks Fiona. I have a lady in my May/June group who is vegetarian and I've sent her your link. This will be valuable information for vegetarian and vegan pilgrims.

Hi Fiona,

I met a young Israeli vegan last summer and he carried dried chick peas, a small pot and burner with him as he walked between stages and on the more isolated routes. He was unaware that chick peas, lentils and other pulses are easily found - ready cooked in glass jars - and can be bought in most Spanish towns and villages. I've gathered from your blog that you're either already living in Spain or suitably familiar with Spanish cuisine so you're probably aware of this already.

I'm not a vegan but ready cooked beans or chick peas, combined with some olive oil and vinegar that other pilgrims left behind made for a quick, filling and tasty meal. Especially in those albergues where cooking space/facilities were at a premium.

I look forward to reading about your experiences.

Many thanks all,

Annie- thanks for sending your friend my link; always good to keep in touch with other veggies & vegans.

Darran- At the moment I live in Gibraltar and do most of my food shopping in Spain. Yes, good supplies of chick peas in jars etc. Think I will mostly carry dried fruit & nuts & power bars as emergency supplies as jars of chick peas prob too heavy. Thanks for the advice tho, much appreciated

Loes- I use happy Cow website quite a lot; it is invaluable, especially s a vegan. I have already sourced a vegan eatery in Pamplona

Will add more to my Blog in the coming week. Am in London this week as hubbie is running the Marathon on Sunday, so will source some (light, vegan) foodstuff to take back with me.

Will be setting-off in less that 4 weeks now and VERY EXCITED about it! Trains booked to get to Pamplona, then bus & taxi to get to SJPP. Yeyy! xx

Hi Fiona,

I meant that the jars are easy to buy when you get in to a town as opposed to carrying them with you. I carried bananas and dried fruits with me when walking. Depending on when you arrive in a town, you may have quite a wait until the local restaurant opens. I found bean or similar salads were a quick, no-cook option for when hunger struck.

Ideal pocket guides for during and after your Camino. Each weighs just 40g (1.4 oz).
Vegetarian food only is served at Refugio en Herrerías at the top of the Valcarce river valley before La Faba. The hospitalera is Spanish, her husband is from Chicago.

After remembering now that there was a vegetarian albergue, or at least one that offered a vegetarian pilgrims meal in Agés. They also had a yoga or meditation room I think. Can't remember the name of it but it's just on the entrance to the town.

I spent the night in Agés rather than San Juan de Ortega, but didn't stay in that albergue. Perhaps someone else will remember the name.
