Verizon iPhone 8 Plus is Unlocked?

Time of past OR future Camino
2010, 2015, 2017, 2019, 2024
I am from the US. I will be walking the Camino Portugues in April. I have a Verizon iPhone 8 Plus. In my research, I found that an iPhone 8 Plus bought from Verizon is unlocked and can be used anywhere when replaced with the local sim. This is not true with other carriers (Sprint, AT&T etc...). I feel quite lucky as I just happen to be a Verizon user. I would like to know if this is indeed true. Has anyone used their Verizon iPhone 8 Plus (or other iPhones) on the caminos? Thanks in advance.

I've used my Verizon iPhone 6 & 7 in Spain with a Spanish SIM, no problems. Worked like a charm!

I have also used my iPhone 6s in Spain, Portugal, and France with no problems. I walked the Camino Portuguese in May 2017. I needed to get a SIM card for both Portugal and then Spain. There may be SIM cards that cover both countries, but didn’t discover that option when I arrived in Lisbon. Buen Camino

Unless Verizon has recently changed their policy, all their recent LTE phones are unlocked. We used our iPhone 5S's in Portugal and Spain in May 2017 and had to buy separate SIM cards for the two countries. However, after that trip the EU did away with roaming requirements and when we returned in the fall for a cruise, we were able to use our phones (upgraded to iPhone SE's) in Spain, Italy, and France on a single SIM card. Just be sure to purchase the right plan to get the free roaming--the clerk at the phone store will be able to help with this. FWIW, we used Vodaphone on both of those trips.

Thank you for all of your responses. I'm glad that I am a Verizon customer in this particular case (unlocked iPhones). Bom Caminho.

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.
