That's exactly what I did two weeks ago It was great, but I didn't like the turn eastward to Rates from Vila at all! One of my worst days, although having a bad cold didn't help.In my opinion, the best way out of Porto is down Douro river, then up to coast: Leixoes, Matosinhos, Angeiras, Vila do Conde, a beautiful way to start the Camino

Hello,
Can you please tell me why you didn't enjoy it (other than your cold, of course).
Sounds lovely. It’s May 16. We walked close to 7 or 8 km of boardwalk along the ocean. It’s overcast, windy and some on and off showers.
oUnfortunately Depinho put no comment in this thread, but in Wikiloc we have one in Portugues:
"its the connection between VdC and Rates avoiding the busy roads". it should not be the same experience as in #5.
If you don't like that you can try the Ecovia between Povoa and Rates (~15km, orange line on the map).
It does not look like any danger from car traffic:Waymarked Trails - Hiking
Waymarked Trails shows hiking routes from the local to international level, with maps and information from OpenStreetMap.hiking.waymarkedtrails.org
Unfortunately Depinho put no comment in this thread, but in Wikiloc we have one in Portugues:

We had the exact same impression around the same time.Hi Lynne,
The road was quite narrow and not much room on the shoulder. There were many cars zooming by and their tires made lots of noise on all the cobbles. I also didn't feel the few towns nor the scenery very nice on that stretch. It was a rather hot day, as well...nothing else I can add and it's all just my experience and opinion.
Wish I'd taken a taxi on that stretch. It was about my only bad memory of the Portuguese Camino.I took a taxi from Vila do Conde to Rates mid May. It cost €5 and worth it for me. I went to the central route as the wind on the coast was too much for me.
We had the exact same impression around the same time.
I'm sure your information will be helpful to many other walkers. For this reason I have put an alternative, shorter and safer, to understand that the one that is used is wrong.
