Another silly question. I start camino(SJP) on the19th September. Would I be able to go to Lourdes and still start my camino on the same day. I'd really love to see Lourdes. And I think this will be my only chance to see it.

Hello @Travelite, Lourdes is in France, about a 3 or 4 hour train journey from Saint Jean p de Port. Depends on how much time you have.

If your schedule permits and your time is flexible, you can start your Camino from Lourdes. It takes about 6 to 8 days to walk from there to St Jean Pied de Port. I have thought about doing this myself.

No! Sorry to be blunt, but no....

Why even go to Lourdes if you're not going to see Lourdes? And believe me, this strange but quite wonderful place is very much worth taking some time to see. I've been three times, most recently this past May - and my first vist in 1977 was life-changing!

When your bus or train pulls in, find your accomodation and dump your mochilla.... Then explore - soak up the unique atmosphere - drink the water, buy kitchy gifts to send home if you like, or buy a tee-shirt and a souvenir walking stick.... I very much recommend visiting Lourdes Castle for its magnificent vistas (see the photo below, looking towards the Shrine).... Stop by the Camino office and get stamped.... Enjoy a nice dinner....

And go to Mass at the Grotto. There are frequent English-language services.... An early morning Mass would be best - because then you can hike off into the west in an elevated state of mind, feeling like a bona fide pilgrim.... The walk west from Lourdes to Oloron is about as good as it gets, and you shouid reach SJPdeP in a week or so.

My Camino started with 3 nights in Lourdes - it’s a magical place - I agree, don’t go there if you don’t want to do at least a full pilgrimage day there. If time is an issue, and you still want to go, I would consider visiting Lourdes and then taking out public transport to start further along the way.

BTW love the OP - hilarious and so true. My reply is to Travelite of course.
 

This sounds lovely! I belive you got us dreaming about experience Lourdes now. But I wonder how much is the cost of doing so? (So we know approximately how much extra we have to come up with.)

Check train and bus schedules. Last year I took the train from Lourdes to SJPP. How many run and at what time you can ascertain via the web. It was a great experience traveling into SJPP with fellow pilgrims. Also, I only spent one day in Lou
