Time of past OR future Camino
March 2019 & April 2023
Scenery across Somport Pass was spectacular but today’s walk to Jaca was ok. We have a few more weeks to walk & not needing to complete whole sections. Thinking we might bus ahead. Suggestions for beautiful sections?

I recommend visiting the old monastery of San Juan de la Peña (the new one nearby is old too and is now partly a fancy hotel and partly a museum). These are on the Camino Catalon and supposedly can be walked to from Jaca and then you continue on to the Camino Aragonese at Santa Cilia the same day. To the monasteries though the trail may not be marked well so the usual suggestion is to take the morning bus that the employees do.

The old monastery is 10th century but since it was used for centuries it incorporates several architectural styles.

 
Yes ,what Rick said. You can catch a bus from Jaca to San Juan Pena and walk down the Aragones from there. It's a lovely walk and you will end up down on the Camino Frances in Puente la Reina. I wouldn't miss the monastery, myself!

You will never enjoy better scenery than you did crossing the Somport....

If you have not walked the Frances then I suggest that you bus from Jaca to Pamplona, spend some time soaking up that wonderful city and its wonders, and then walk on west at least as far as Logrono....
 
Agreed, a bus from Jaca makes a lot of sense even though it doesn't sound vey "pilgrimish" but it is a long walk up the hill to get there. There is a place to stay at San Juan de la Pena as well as a hostel at the bottom of the hill. Then just start walking the Aragones to Eunate.

Don’t take the bus just yet! You’ll miss the detour to Castillo de Javier (you’ll find details of this detour on apps like Buen Camino) and then for sceneries another detour after Sanguesa to Foz de Lumbier.

That is by far one of my more favorite Caminos. You could walk and tie up with the francaise and walk back to say St Sean Pied de Port.
