Hello,
I am walking the coastal route beginning of June and wondering about free Wi-Fi access starting in Porto. I am coming from the U.S. and curious about what I should do about international access. I have Verizon.

With Verizon it is $10 per day once you turn the data on so if you don’t want this charge turn cellular to off (it won’t charge you until you have cellular on and you’ve selected “roaming” on underneath the cellular section. Then once you open a browser you will get a text message that you will be charged, or rather than you are being charged). Just use Wi-Fi at the cafes and albergues.

Free Wi-Fi is everywhere. We’ve walked the Portuguese routes twice and have never had any difficulty getting on wi-fi in cafes, restaurants, albergues, hotels, etc. You’ll easily find it whenever you want to access data.

They give the feeling of being far advanced of the US in WIFI (wee fee) use and availability... Seems no matter where you are the business will have it available... As far as the Verizon $10 a day plan, for $30 a sim or esim will serve you well to get... I was in Portugal Spain France for 3 months in 2022, used SIM cards for absolutely everything including Google searches Google maps communications email all the time posting to Facebook and no matter what, and never used up the total gigabytes achievable. And I believe I paid less than $30 for the SIM cards at Vodafone or Orange. I know this wasn't your question, but someone else offered it and I thought I would offer the counter.

I have Verizon and their international plan is $10/day or $100/month limited to your data plan. I used this traveling Dec 2022 without problems. Recognized whenever I entered a different country.

Save your money and buy an esim the day before you go. Use wifi when available, which is a lot of places, use the esim data when out on the way. Use WhatsApp to make phone calls. Esims are easier than you think, if your phone supports them.

Thanks for this! I have a Galaxy A53 which doesn't have eSIM capability. It's through Metro. When I called them they said they don't have international plans, but they did unlock it for me, so I'm planning on buying a Vodafone SIM at OPO.

Every year I go to Vodafone (Orange is a good choice too). I go to a store and get a SIM card. I pay about 20 euros for 28 days with Verizon. Really easy to recharge if you need more days. I get plenty of data. Last year I got 20 gigas. I think I had 200 minutes within the EU. There are slightly more expensive plans that allow you to call the US too. I use WhatsApp to call my wife and kids. It works great. It is cheap and you have excellent coverage.
