Wilderness backpacking is very different than walks across European nations. Someone who walks the Camino is not well equipped to hike the AT (as depicted in this new movie) or the PCT (as depicted in WILD). Even the relatively short John Muir trail is nothing like the Camino because all these, and many other American wilderness trails, have people walking in areas where you can go several days without any chance of re-supply of water or food. Shelters are also few and far between so tents, cooking gear, bear canisters, etc are advised, and in some cases equipment is required. Also, on some of the trails permits must be applied for, and are often denied.

While I come from a background of wilderness backpacking I love the European style "daypacking" that is really what is experienced on the Camino and other trails.

I would strongly encourage any Camino walker who is curious to try out American wilderness backpacking, but I'd strongly suggest that you do a LOT OF HOMEWORK -- just like you did prior to a Camino -- to find out what you need and to adjust your expectations.

Thanks for the info, for those of us that live with these trails in our back yards. It just reminds us we have more ground to cover if one so desires. The continental divide trail is something I have & do walk. But as I get older the European Camino's just seem to be more comfortable, less weight, better food, get to sleep on a bed, get to make new freinds from around the world & last not have to pray alone. I think either will bring you closer to your faith. Yet they are so completely different.

I found the book to be very condenscending to the people of the south. Hopefully the movie does better.

Camino Frances (August 19-sept 30,2013) (8/2017)
I walked the Camino for me, my family, my health and my spirit. It was a walk that I believed that I could accomplish. There are many trails out here in California. There is so much beauty that it sometimes can take your breath away. To walk some of these a lot of these trails require a lot of wilderness hiking skills. There are no arrows telling you in which direction to go. A person can truly get lost and become very vunerable to all kinds of things. Wilderness hiking is not for everybody, but for the skilled.

The Camino is a spiritual journey. The Camino allows you to follow the trails, provides water, solitude at times, friendships and culture. A person must be open to this journey. It is a journey that allows you to reflect on yourself, your life and even history. There are trails on the Camino that zig zag between the present and the past. This trail called the Camino shows you the journey that leads you home and sometimes back again.
Many people also walk the Camino for health or religious purposes etc.
It is a trail well travel. Buen Camino.
