Hi,

I'm looking to book my flight out for starting the Camino Norte in November,

I have found a good flight from Scotland to Santander, I was just wondering how easy it is to get from Santander to Irún?

Kind regards
K

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

I think bus is best.
You can get a bus straight from Santander Airport to the Bus Terminal in Bilbao. You may have to change there for Irun.

Ah perfect,

Yeah I saw the trains were a little less suitable, thank you for the link!

Hoping to get the flight booked today, then the REAL planning commences :-D

Thank you

It's very easy. There's a daily bus from Santander's airport to Irún. If the schedule of the direct bus doesn't suit you, there's frequent bus service from Santander's airport to downtown Santander. Once in downtown Santander, there's quite frequent bus service to Irún. Alternatively, you could take a bus from Santander's airport to Bilbao and change in Bilbao to bus to Irún but buses from Santander's airport to Bilbao are less frequent than from downtown Santander to Irún. All the quoted routes are made by Alsa so take a look at their web to see what schedule(s) suits you more.

P.S.: I'm not fully sure but I think the bus from Santander's airport to downtown Santander leaves you outside of the bus station in downtown Santander (not inside it). OTOH, buses from Santader to Irún depart from inside the bus station.

Many thanks for all this invo

Thank you so very much for that super informative reply, I've checked the direct times and it's not ideal, so I will do the Santander-Bilbao-Irun combo.

It's feeling real now, I finally made the decision, going with walking for a week and seeing how I get on. If it's too difficult with the time of year I will be sensible and move on down to the Frances. Looking forward to it, aiming at least for Irun to Bilbao.

Thank you again. I should have remembered how valuable this website was when I planned my very first Camino.

Thanks

Ideal pocket guides for during and after your Camino. Each weighs just 40g (1.4 oz).
Renfe Feve has three trains daily from Santander to Bilbao Abando Indalecio Prieto.

Euskotren operates a tram and a series of commuter trains from Bilbao Abando Indalecio Prieto to Irun. This involves several transfers and is somewhat slow.

It might be more time effective to take Bilbao Metro from the Bilbao train station to San Mames where the Termibus is located and take a bus from Bilbao to San Sebastian. The new bus station in San Sebastian is co-located with the Renfe station. Then take the Renfe Cercanias train from San Sebastian to Irun Renfe Station.

1. Bus from Santander Airport to Santander

2. ALSA bus from Santander to Bilbao.

3. ALSA or PESA bus from Bilbao to San Sebastian.

4. Renfe Cercanias from San Sebastian to Irun.
