Yes thank you. I was expecting a big write up in the local news but it was relegated to the back. No obvious damage.

ANZ as a whole gets lots of earthquakes but they are rarer around Tamiki Makaurau Auckland. I have also lived in Wellington as @VNwalking alluded to, earthquakes are much more common there.

It is still raining here, although lightly at the moment and my garden is waterlogged and I have been forced to pick my tomatoes so that they don't burst with all the water they are getting. I am giving them away to my neighbours and the local Salvation Army food bank. My courgettes are definitely not liking all this water. About the only thing that is loving it is my Blueberries and I need to harvest them.

Thanks for the well wishes all round and I hope that everyone else is also well.

On our walk today there wasn't anybody out. We went for our most often done walk even though it was cold and Peg HATES the cold. How cold was it? Air temperature of 16⁰ F and a wind chill of -1⁰ F (-9 and -18 C). Around 4:OO AM we expect -9 and -30 F (-23 and -34 C).

But, for fun, remember me reporting on my hike up Mt. Washington last year? It's not very high but it has extreme weather conditions. At 6:20 this evening the summit temperature was -45 F / -42 C and the wind chill was -105 F / -76 C. And things are getting worse. Wind gusts of twice hurricane speed are expected tonight.

Be careful out there my fellow Yankees.

Just catching up with your news. Sentient beings, tomatoes and blueberries? We are all part of ecosystems... we know how humans feel, and it is good to see that every cloud has a silver lining in your sharing of produce. There is something here in Ireland, Food cloud, I think, that organises redistribution of excess foodstuffs from supermarkets to food banks and kitchens, and that is a consolation in times of difficulties...

My first earthquake was in California ... during a geology lecture.

Our river is usually frozen bank to bank for all of January but there has been hardly any ice showing at all.

From no ice to iced over bank to bank in some sections. Happened overnight with a low of -11⁰ F (-24⁰ C). Come time for our walk we should have the same conditions as yesterday.

I have only known -23C when visiting Chicago years ago and Lake Michigan froze..amazing view from the 27th floor of the hotel. I can’t imagine -40.

Come time for our [Sunday] walk we should have the same conditions as yesterday.

Close. Colder but less wind so it was still in the range of -1⁰ F, -18⁰ C. It's getting warmer this week though. Saturday we saw no other walkers but yesterday, Sunday, there was one, a woman we often encounter and chat with. We saw her car but we didn't cross paths.

Next time with your group please get another picture of the dog. The picture reminds us of our late dog Beau who loved our hikes and walks, here pictured in his role of Swamp Dog. He loved mud. We had him fetch a stick from a brook before heading back to the car.

Walked for two days in the Masca/ Santiago del Teide region in Tenerife
Always some amazing scenery here and hard walking
First day it took us three and a half hours to walk 10km and then we missed the bus by 5 minutes and no taxi available
It was thumbs up/ hitch and a lovely young Italian couple picked us up
We had a nice coffee together
Today it was from Masca to the other side of the island Buenavista and bus back
Going down, the hairpins were hair raising but the scenery outstanding
the island of La Gomera seen in the distance
Then back to Santiago del Teide to see the church..
There’s even a Holy door at the side
Visited the visitors centre then with some wonderful videos of the 1909 volcano eruption

Two good walks on my day off today. First along the river near my home - many people fishing from the bank and docks. Then the trails of the forest along the Ladner marsh. Very muddy in places - boots and trousers as muddy as yours @SabsP ! A good riddle for a pilgrim before crossing a bridge. Answer?
As always, enjoying the carvings by the "mystery carver" who I think after a few years has now been identified. A few trees along one trail showed signs of activity by some very busy beavers.

...it takes determination to walk out the door and wade upward through the humid fug of a rainforest. It gets harder every day to leave the pleasures of a refridgerated existence -idle chatter, yummy food, no need to do a thing. But I do it.

There is an old wooden pallette tossed beneath a gumtree at the top of a mountain behind my sister´s place. It takes at least half an hour´s effort to get to it. And when I do, I flop onto my back for Siesta...

Malpais de Rasca and the Malpaise de Guimar
Both by the sea
Teide peeking out of the clouds covered in snow

Passed through the leper village just past Abades , a village that never was and now in ruins
When the disease was rampant here, no one lived on this side of the island so the lepers wold be conveniently out of the way
Then scientists discovered Dapsone, a drug that would revolutionised the treatment of the disease, and so this colony was not needed.
It was quite eerie walking through it though

On to Candelaria where we visited the museum with its contemporary art and national dress and the Basilica of the Virgin Mary, the patron of the Canary Islands

Good weather here too, and it's going to get even better soon.

I finally got around to getting out early to get walking exercise. The last year I pretty much did only walks with Peg. Really, in general, they were too short and too slow. Today I walked my old exercise trail and managed to do it in my old typical time. Now I've got to keep it up now when it gets light earlier.

Two new sights along the way. Near the spot where Henry David Thoreau's father had a sawmill for his pencil manufactury I counted 16 trees downed by beavers. Most of them had been hauled away. I've never seen so many gnawed in one place.

At my turn-around point a home owner posted a number of signs protesting a ruling that the dirt road next to his property was open to public traffic. If totally private it would cut off public land along old sections of Estabrook Road from the paved sections of the same road. It's not in my town so I'll leave it to the lawyers and the final appeals judge.

A local light rail trip, intending to walk via a park to St James's church. I missed a turn, so took the main road.
First, a photo of what is known as una espadaña in castellano. Then an ugly dirty window with rubbish - that too is part of urban life.
As often, looking down, I saw roots, and was aware of the changing surfaces as the city ate its way out into the country - and there, those who could not afford the better central addresses had/have little beauty to inspire them.
Some spring flowers surrounding the approach to St Audoen's church;
evidence of Viking presence, and a doorway at the side of Christchurch Cathedral.

Two weeks ago we took walks on days where the morning temperatures were setting record lows. The last two days were giving us record afternoon highs.

Here's a tick tip found on a recent walk.


One day years ago our dog and I had a walk in an area marked with tick warnings. We went off trail and walked through brush for awhile. Just a short distance from the parking lot I checked myself for ticks. None. Then in the middle of the trail I got down on one knee and checked the dog. None. I was surprised at this. Right after pulling out of the parking lot I see a swarm of larval ticks crawling up my trouser leg. I had knelt on top of a hatching nest.

Another reason is that I have been waiting for a pacemaker to help my not so good heart. Now the pacemaker is in its place and it feels safer to be walking. And today the weather was beautifu!

Two walks of note today. There was a light snow falling this morning and Peg was too busy to walk today so I took a longer walk by myself down an old road lined on both sides with stone walls. Pretty but I didn't have my smartphone with me to prove it.

In the afternoon I took a walk across the street to the mailbox but I quickly headed back inside to get the smartphone. I then visited a neighbor to get him to look out his porch window to see the bald eagle perched in one of his trees. We then headed upstairs to get a closer view. His phone has the better camera and so this is his picture taken through a window and a screen.

Off the bus and up the steep hill for 2 km to El Jaral
Found the sign to Vera Enriques
6.5 km….easy peas, we’ll be there in no time for coffee….or not
A nice path for 5 minutes and then came the Barranco/ravine
Loose rocks, stones down and up the other side
Wont be doing this one again
Then an even deeper barranco but the zigzag path was good
Onto Las Fuentes village, almost depopulated but now many signs of agriculture returning
with the never ending winding stony path the village seemed further away than ever, but get there we did…eventually

The gizmo said 7 km and it had taken us 5 hours

Krk is the largest island in the Adriatic and has more than 300 km of marked hiking trails.
Camino Krk is a 150 km long trail around the island.
The accommodation available on the island of Krk is slightly different from what pilgrims are used to on the camino routes in Spain and Portugal. There are no specialized pilgrim hostels, so it is necessary to arrange your own accommodation in local apartments and camps.

I was located in Baška and spent two days hiking on the surrounding trails, partly on the Camino route.
On the map below you can see this part of the island (red squared) and Camino way (blue).

This is very important part of Croatia since some of first written documents about Croatian christian history has been found near Baška.
Baška tablet is one of the first monuments containing an inscription in the Croatian recension of the Church Slavonic language, dating from c. 1100 AD. The inscription is written in the Glagolitic script. It was discovered in 1851 in the Church of St. Lucy (photo attached).

Camino Krk is an easy trail and you can do it in a week, but you will need a help of local people (agency) since you have to organize accomodation and transport from stage to stage.

I was hiking on slightly more demanding trails, 6 to 7 hours per day, carrying everything with me.
And most important - summer is not suitable for walking Camino Krk, too hot and too many tourists.
Spring time is ideal.

I forgot to answer to some specific questions... the trail is not difficult from what I know so far.
Camino Krk is a new pilgrimage route and I didn't walk any full stage (just partially), but this spring I'm planning to do one or two full stages. It's hour and a half driving from Zagreb and ideal for weekends.

Krk is a tourist destination and has a lot of facilities (apartments, hotels, camps, restaurants, cafes, shops..) but very seasonal, during summertime there is a plenty of possibilities (and big crowd).
For walking out of the season you have to plan a little bit more, but some resources are always available since there are 18.000 people living on the island.

Some parts are very sunny and without any shade so I would not recommend summertime as I already mentioned.

Thanks for that, @dugavski. Your comment about Baška tablet and its inscription carved in Glagolitic script stirred up some interesting memories for me.

Whilst walking through Slovakia in 2018, I came across some people in Banská Bystrica who were passionate about teaching the Glagolitic script and Slavic heritage to children. I knew nothing of it before this. A few days later I stumbled upon the village of Močenok, the birth place of St Goradz (9th century), a pupil of the Greco-Byzantine brothers Saints Cyril and Methodius who created the Glagolitic and Cyrillic alphabets.... about which I'm sure you already know . Goradz was Methodius' successor.

I had a wonderful time in Močenok. One of the village leaders invited me in to the municipal offices for coffee. He introduced me to the local soccer team, took me to band practice and the local orphanage which in former times was a bishops summer palace. Such hospitality!

Every year since 1992 the Močenok municipality puts on a theatre festival in honour of Saints Goradz, Cyril and Methodious. When I passsed by in 2018 Močenok was hoping to be included in the European cultural route of Saints Cyril and Methodious.

Going for a long walk is a fine education. I wouldn't mind following a trail through Moravia, seeing Alphonse Mucha's 'Slav Epic' which I think may be in Brno, then somehow making my way down through Croatia. That would be interesting.

Pic was taken at the jetty in MDR where folks park their cars and either sit quietly in them watching boats sail in and out of jetty; or walk along boardwalk.

The area with apartments to one side and McMansions on the other. Where the Venice canal bifurcates said mansions.

I love it there. My quiet place. On a clear day like Thursday was you could see the snow-capped mountains, Catalina Island, El Segundo refinery, and Malibu. All the while watching and listening to jets leaving LAX.

The walks of the last two weeks have been a bit of everything. Walked all day in the rain and then you come home the sun starts to shine. The other walks were normal except for the last one where I, as one of the volunteers of a group of transgender children, had to deal with a hostile gentleman. Long story short, called 112 and within 5 minutes he was taken away.

Two weeks ago on this thread I posted a picture of a bald eagle perched in a neighbor's tree. We've seen them occasionally flying along the river but we're really excited now. Yesterday from our kitchen window I saw a pair of them fly by. Later, over a period of about a half an hour, we could see them circling around and once in awhile land in a tall pine across the river. This morning we've seen them over a few hours heading in and out of the same place. Using binoculars I think I can see a nest and a white head when the boughs blow the right way.

Fifty years ago I took a wildlife management course for a college elective and we had to write a paper on an endangered animal. Bald eagles were on the list. They have been doing alright since and I'm so happy to have some as neighbors.

I also remember a childhood where the bald eagle was doomed. I never thought I would see one except in a photo book about animals.

I was so excited to see hundreds around a lake in Idaho swooping for Kokanee a few years ago and now I see them regularly around lakes and streams all over. It is an awesome recovery for a species.

Snow and sleet gave way to bright and even relatively warm sunshine later in the day. The photos were taken between 09.30 and 10.00.
The pampas grass with the scattering of snow is surely not something to expect in its natural habitat.


The Queen's tree still had some snow by the time I took the photo.
Behind the trees in the final photo, somewhere up in the hills, is the Hellfire Club. I just did a duckduckgo search and learned that in essence, Hellfire clubs were for gentlemen with more money than sense...

All was quiet along the 10km loop of my home patch. Only passed one other walker! A lull before this area bursts into spring life. There are signs! Still lots of debris along the tidal paths from winter storms. I couldn't get through a couple of weeks ago but today was happy to find that the mystery builder had re-built their usual board and log bridge. Must be the same person who always makes sure there is a log barrier protecting a little patch of daffodils in the middle of a path.

Isn't nature so healing, on the one hand? And the birds - they have no need of logos, they are so smart in their identification ruses!

No need here either. We still have a layer of roundabout 60 cm of old snow. However, it has not been snowing for weeks so it would be nice to get a new layer to cover all the dog pee around the house However for that 2 cm would be sufficient, not the 20 or 30 cm or more that might be coming ...

Narvik? That reminds me of traveling there in the 70s and eating shrimp galore from the harbor market…for 5 days because it was too expensive for us to go into a restaurant. We were students at the time…

Norway is still not a cheap place to eat out So a waffle with Guldbrands cheese was the only served food I bough. All the rest was frozen pizza from the supermarket … which of course I gave a chance to get hot in the oven
