On the rare occasions when I have had to email I have usually attached a translation of my message from Google Translate or similar. Keeping it short and to the point minimises the chance of misunderstanding.
This is strictly anecdotal evidence - I have walked 1200 km "alone" on the camino over 4 different years and have not experienced anything remotely dangerous. The closest was a drunk pilgrim that was a little unpleasant, but that was it.
