How do people 60-and-over plan their Camino?
I (63) just completed 200 miles from Leon to Santiago on the Camino Frances (in Sept.) and would recommend that route for your first trip. private rooms in albergues
That's what I did in Sept. of this year and a private room averaged around 25 euros. There are also a lot of small "guest houses" or small hotels for a few euros more. For planning purposes I would use 25-35 euros. Never spent more then that.- Dancoyne

Skip the middle??
I just completed the section from Leon to Santiago in Sept. It was a great section to travel and we averaged 15 miles per day but it took us 2 weeks non stop. I would agree with most of the comments above. I'm 63 and just finished 310 km (Leon to Santiago) in Sept. Although I hike about 6-8 miles every week, on the Camino I walked an average of 15 miles a day with a 20 kilo pack. In retrospect I wouldn't do it that way again. I would take more...- Dancoyne

Hotels near Chamartin station, Madrid.
I stayed at the NH hotel across the street from the Atocha train station. There are 2 with in a block of the train station and both are very nice. Realistic time frame
I just finished 310 km from Leon to Santiago and we averaged 15 miles per day and that made for a long day! If I do it again I would do less miles per day. I would recommend that you start somewhere closer to Santiago and hike fewer miles per day and enjoy the time with your son.- Dancoyne
